Have been in this profession for 30 yrs. It has never been lucrative. Only when everyone is rolling high do LAs seem to fair well, in the broad sense. In hindsight I wish I had endured one more year of college and gotten that Masters in Urban Planning – seems to be more opportunities there. I started out in the recession of the early 80’s and…[Read more]

About 8 years ago I was working for a design/build.One day I had jury duty and got dismissed early. I had nice clothes on and a good pair of shoes. On the way back to the shop/office I stopped at a nursery to check the inventory as I often did. This time I had two “yard guys” going around with me, moving plants out of my way, making sure I did n…[Read more]

haha. Dam you Madison Ave!!
what do they say? Don’t hate the player hate the game.
And I agree with what you say. But is there nothing to the fact that when you dress sharp, comb your hair(seriously no pun here), get a nice shave it makes you feel good and more confident. Even if you have been sold that image, I still feel it. If i were to w…[Read more] -

Good News! Land8Lounge has had two new bearded members join within the last 3 hours! One of them is a “gardener” and the other one is Canadian… Is somebody trying to tell me something?

Yeah, my brother’s wife thinks that guys with beards “are hiding something”. I guess all guys prior to the invention of the safety razor were hiding something, based on that logic… perception is a funny thing… so if I take a razor to my face every day I’m “clean-cut” and an upstanding citizen but if I allow my facial hair to grow to a…[Read more]

Thanks. I’m very proud of my engineering experience, and now as a principal and owner of a practice, it has helped me with more pragmatic minded clients. I can also communicate with civil engineers – not to mention lead teams with them on it.

LARE Multiple Choice Discussion 15 years, 2 months agoRay and everyone,
I am taking B here shortly but I have a lingering question about the slope steepness ratio method. Norman Booth is writing it horizontal first, verical second 4:1(Basic Elements of Landscape Architectural Design, page 31). Thomas Russ is writing it in reverse 1:4 (Site Planning and Design, Page 125) Is there a reason why the…[Read more] -

Cool, it takes a little getting used to…..but the difference in price with acad makes it easier to tolerate.
I tried the DraftSight program and found it very unstable, but it’s free…..maybe that’s why.
I use acad2004 and BricsCad…..I’m geeting familiar w/ BricsCad but like it so far……Oh, and I can open old acad dwg files in BricsCad…[Read more] -

Maybe it is the east coast in me, but personally I would not have a beard if I was job hunting. I think having a beard is a bigger mark on your character(good or bad it is noted) than not having a beard.
but if done well, it can give a dignified look. -

MauiBob – Yeah, I sure do… too much time… know anyone who’s hiring? I don’t know if the pushover thing is true. Some companies do have a no facial hair policy. Shaving you can control. Your stature you cannot… fortunately, I don’t have any issues with my height… Do you?
FYI: What are you talking about? I didn’t fit in with the group…?…[Read more] -

appearance is everything, all the time, in my humble..shave the beard, get hair implants, and then go out and sell yourself, or what is left of ‘it’..
for me, beard ok – earring NO..didn’t hire a guy becuase of his earring..hired the cute girl instead who proceeded to charm the boss (she was much younger and cuter than me, plus no need to make…[Read more] -

An investment newsletter I get said the same thing about homebuilder stocks a few months back. Not that I have any money to invest!
So how about some tips on how to get into ecommerce? That’s what I’d like to see! Today I had an informational interview for selling insurance. Yeah, that’s what I’ve come to! -

I downloaded Bricscad and screwed around with it. Very similar to Autodesk.
Thanks for all the input. -

I use AcadLt 2008 at home and ACAD LDt 2009 at work (both 2007 dwg format). I believe that I have received only one file from an architect that was using the 2010 format. I’m sure it will be coming, though.
Bricscad sounds like the best way to stay current on a budget. I like ACAD because I work with it every day, but I’m considering Bricscad…[Read more] -

Thomas, dude you sure have plenty of free time on your hands!! The employer doesn’t want someone who is a pushover and can’t stand on their own belief. What about the question, Do we hire the short or the tall guy?
FYI: Unfortunately, you didn’t get the job because of the beard thing. They thought you didn’t fit in with the group…because you…[Read more] -

That seems weird to me. I could see if you had some weird beard pattern, but clearly you don’t. Maybe there was a problem with others having a particular look and rather than singling anyone out they just made a no beard policy? Could it have been a setup to see if you say yes to everything in a job interview? … or maybe it is for real.

Jessyca, there’s always room in this profession for people who have the passion for it. Don’t ever forget that. Any career has it’s up and down cycles. If I could do this all over again, I would have chosen Business Finance…not that I lack the passion for LA, but its a personal choice. And then, still market my love to do renderings and graphics…[Read more]

lol You know it! The hair on my head can’t handle my elevated testosterone levels so it migrated to safer grounds. By allowing it to flourish on my face it creates a balance, a follicle harmony, if you will. That, and being 33 years old and sedentary, the chin has somehow multiplied. The beard enables me to hide that second chin and redraw my…[Read more]
