I would respectfully disagree in that its not unions but free markets that separate us from third world countries. There are other factors such as a free press, an educated populous, universities and free elections.
Just look in the news and you can see the infectiousness of a little freedom. -

Yea for you! I Passed C too! Thanks everyone for your tips – particularly Andrew G. ‘follow the instructions exactly!’ and the other warnings about precision. I took it to heart – there wasn’t an imprecise turn radius to be seen!

Haven’t been to Detroit, but do understand that Unions bargained against Corporations… To claim unions are at fault for the decisions Corporations made against their own interests is ludicrous.
Corporations at least since the ’80’s have moved to a Quarter focused mindset, cut corners today to get a good share price get my bonus and hopefully I’m…[Read more] -

lol.
Do we have to go right for the kneecaps? Like most people, I really enjoy being able to walk. Couldn’t we ease into things with a few cigar burns, some c-clamp fun or maybe loping off a digit or two? I’m sure I’ll get the picture quickly. I’m a fast learner. You wanna know what really hurts like hell? Stick a pencil between your toes, near…[Read more] -

Does management get any blame at all for the destruction of the auto industry or just the union workers who did as they were told? (While being paid middle class wages)

Hey everyone…I think that the biggest question is terminology. What exactly do you mean by a vertical garden? If you are talking “green walls” then that can be dissected into “living walls” and “green facade walls”. This is a very important distinction as green facade walls are a trellising system that doesn’t contain planting medium, pl…[Read more]

I agree with your points. Locally, unions nearly destroyed McCormick place in Chicago by making it too expensive for vendors to attend trade shows. You literally can’t plug a light into a socket because it’s a union members job and you have to pay him $200 to do it for you. It’s gotten ridiculous. They could get away with it when times were good,…[Read more]

Tanya Olson replied to the topic Vertical gardens are truly sustainable, or not ? in the forum SUSTAINABILITY & DESIGN 15 years, 3 months ago
Many appear not to be sustainable because they take a ecosystem (vertical jungle) and place it completely out of context. The requirement to sustain this kind of life generally aren’t (or can’t be) met in the design solution.
In most locations, they would need deeper soil profiles that are horizontally stratified, not vertical containerized s…[Read more] -

Unions were not the downfall of Detroit. The auto industry decentralized and competition increased ten-fold. You can see much of the same across the whole rust best in all facets of manufacturing and material processing.
At the same time I would say no to a LAUnion. This is not an appropriate profession for union representation. -

Some thoughts on private sector unions:
That will create direct competition with non-union LA firms’ employees over compensation, instead of quality of work. Think there won’t be strongarming to make non-union LA firms into union firms?
You may have to limit your work based on union job descriptions. Want to go out with the survey crew tomor…[Read more] -

So what is the bargaining power? We’ll stop sending you resumes unless our demands are met?
It just may work because some of the the firms receiving those resumes may need to burn the paper in stoves in order to heat their homes this winter. -

Landscape Architects to form a Union?! When I stop laughing long enough, I’ll put in my two cents worth of an opinion.
