That sounds like a great program! Would you tell the students what they were participating in or would it be a covert education program that feels more like a mind-game than a real-world learning experience?

Aloha! This is harsh but truthful. From my personal experience with entry level positions:
Forget the “formal knowledge” of regional vegetation. You’re not gonna do the plant design anyway and certainly won’t select it for use. You will learn on the job as you do the redline or setup the production work in autocad. Site analysis? Are you kidding?…[Read more] -

No it does not make you a control freak. You should seek out the “maintenance” company that did the work and use a line trimmer on their shins while you recite proper pruning techniques.

Please read above my comments to Thomas!! And pay CLOSE attention to paragraph 4, beginning with “Obviously”. Some of us really do have dream jobs we love and live in paradise too. If I lived in Jersey, I wouldn’t look forward to a day in the office either.
“Odds are that if you quit, the next job you find will only be crappier.” Well said. P…[Read more] -

Okay…we’ll have to agree to disagree and stop it there! I see this going around in circles.
Thomas, your “experience” is nothing compared to my so-called sob story. You are single and can move about in an instant, basically…liquid. Shoot, job opportunities should be knocking on your door day and night. Food? Who needs it? 2 meals per week are p…[Read more] -

That pretty much covers everything my program was lacking! Slightly relieving to see that it wasn’t just my school. I would add “basic economics” so that you understand the cycles in the construction industry and can make preparations.

I love Tom’s world. Also agree with Craig–it is a sickening feeling to see your work abused or abandoned. Too bad we can’t prosecute for landscape abuse.
I would start an intensive post-BLA work/study program which taught what an LA going into private practice really needs to know: how things are built and why they fail, consequences…[Read more] -

Hello Sean:
I thought I might be able to offer some help (thoughts) with respect to the application of social media and how to identify the platforms that would fit (meet) the needs of landscape architects. I’m presently a student at UW in the Therapeutic and Healing Landscape Design Certificate Program. I’m also a communications professional…[Read more] -

The biggest factor on what to charge is what is the value of what is being produced. No one here knows either your ability, the speed of your production, the complexity of the job, or how much your prospect values what you produce. It does not matter if you are a student, a recent graduate, a seasoned LA, a self taught design/build, or a…[Read more]

Hi Lana,
Yeah our department already posted couple of announcement regarding this event. I am really looking forward to it and planning on going. There is one question tho. Do we need to register or is the registration only for the firms that are attending? Thank you for the information too. -

Check out “The Dip” by Seth Godin. It is on my reading list, just haven’t got to it yet.
Here is what the author says about his book:
“It’s a mind grenade, a little bit of insight that will help you see what’s causing your organization (or you) to get stuck. Here’s the official description:
The old saying is wrong-winners do quit, and qu…[Read more] -

Hi Lin Ye! My name is Lana, and I’m a student at Purdue in the LA program. This year, we’re hosting LABash where we’ll be having a big career fair with large firms as well as speakers from OLIN, Sasaki, etc. I would definitely consider coming if you’re looking for internships!

I understand the idea of glass half full, but waking up every day looking forward to a day in the office? That’s a bit fluffy. It will always be work, that’s why they pay you to do it. That’s why people look forward to retirement. Life isn’t passing you by if you are unhappy at your job. You’re still getting experience, getting paid, you ha…[Read more]
