“What you’re seeing is the New Urbanism about to swallow the landscape urbanists,” Duany said. His plan now, he said, is to systematically “assimilate” the language and strategies that have made his opponents such a white-hot brand. “We’re trying to upgrade ourselves.”
Duany pretty much sums it up right there… he essentially wants to turn New U…[Read more] -

Nice write-up.
Reading archinect really puts things in perspective in terms of the job market and who’s out there doing what. I like how the interviewee mentions the connection between architecture and farming or landscape as I interpret it. Perhaps some of us could look at this as a commentary on the true future of landscape architecture as it…[Read more] -

It depends on where on the west coast, but if you are in So Cal, in the LA Inland Empire area there is OF Wolfenberger in Chino.
Their website is: http://www.ofwolfinbargerinc.com/
I used their nutrient mix with shavings for my podium designs. it is like 800 lbs per cubic yard instead of 2500 lbs for fill dirt. -

I completely disagree that landscape languished prior to 1980, and I also disagree that U of Penn ecological design was happening in ‘the late eighties” – Ian McHarg started the school in the sixties, and his ideas did not change.
Just factual inaccuracies, but it is like people were BORN in 1980 – good grief, we MUST include history in our…[Read more] -

Mark – The view is a matter of what you’re trying to show, and it looks like there’s a need to see beyond the green screen and show the actual memorial. Assuming that’s the case, the same rules apply (perspective or elevation). You’ll need a good value scale, and a reliable method for using it. If you’ve got Photoshop, there are some great br…[Read more]

SketchUp 15 years, 3 months agoNot a bad question to ask at all. The easiest way is to select an item with the black arrow key [or hit spacebar]. Then click the Move tool which has arrows in all directions and can be found in the Large Tool Set or the Getting Started Toolbar [or hit M on the keyboard]. After the item is highlighted and you have the Move tool selected, hol…[Read more]

HA! I think you’ve got the gist of it with your post title Jason. I suppose this means we all have to take a side and dig in huh?
Maybe I haven’t read quite enough, but why is it that these are are only two options and we must go for one or the other 110%? This sort of reminds me of the split between modernism and mchargism (for lack of a…[Read more] -

Ah yes…the dilemma of having a crappy job or no job at all…I’ve pondered the exact same question for the past 1.5 yr. coming very close to quitting multiple times. In the end, the pros of staying at a crappy job outweighed the cons. The logic goes something like this:
- Crappy pay is better than no pay. I would never quit a job unless I ha…

Thanks for the positives comments, I really took what you said in stride. I added a “process” tab that goes into detail of one of my projects. I would be glad to hear what you think. Thanks for the good advice.

Hmm…I wonder if I could learn French in a few weeks in one of those intensive courses like the Army used to use. I had Spanish, and its a Romance language, so I’ll recognize a lot of the Latin roots. I hear Gabon is nice at this time of year.

Agreed on all fronts Nick.
Mark, the image of your design does not flatter at all, I’d try skewing the view to either the right or the left showing the depth and length of the wall and if you have things growing, this will partially hide the letters, which would be a nice touch…
If you render this is sketchup, use late or early day sun p…[Read more] -

That is a tough story.
My current situation is also no raises for the past three years, with the potential of two more w/o. We had some furlough days, but not extra hours for sure. My job is stable , just the pay is going the wrong way. In the late 80’s when the industry crashed, I was in a similar situation to yours except: the 20% reduction…[Read more] - Load More
