aka thats all you will be doing when you start out. AutoCAD – include them.
If you have a half size set of a drawing package you worked on bring that along aside from your portfolio

I don’t see the “coffee shop” model taking over. It is always individual freelance landscape architects, small regional firms, big national/international firms , and multi-discipline office staff. In different economic circumstances you have a higher percentage of this one or that, but you always have all of them because there is always a need for…[Read more]

I have a website, I put the address in the closing of my cover letters as well as in my letterhead and invite if the person who is hiring to look at it, as an option. I have more projects on the website. To that end, you WILL NEED a work sample package you can send them besides the online portfolio. Employers need some physical samples with the…[Read more]

Exactly my experience.
Another thing is that it (the coffee shop model) forces you to pay attention to what you want your business model to be – what you want your practice to look like. You have to pay taxes, keep receipts, look for write offs, etc. I prefer the hands-on of doing this all myself and enjoy understanding every aspect of…[Read more]

If you can believe it, environmental engineers have it even worse than we do….my friend graduated in the spring from one of the best env eng programs in the country and though she did get a job, its an awful civilian Dept. of Defense job located in the worst part of one of the worst states, not gettting any credit toward her PE’s (the…[Read more]

On that note, what’s your opinion of online portfolio sites? I was thinking sending a pdf (which can be fairly easily edited) and sending a link to an online portfolio would be the most convenient way for employers to view my work.

Plusses of the coffeeshop model, as I see it:
Personal autonomy, flexible schedule
No more office politics, unless you have multiple-personality disorder.
You can get back at the big firms by undercutting them, since your expenses are so much lower, hastening their demise.
Working from home, no commute, hence lower cost of living, lower carbon…[Read more] -

Check this out from the 2006 convention that was in town.
It will be cold, but still lots to see if you dress warm enough.
1. If I had one stop to make I would check out the river front area, where gold medal park, guthrie theatre, new 35w bridge, stone arch bridge area.
2. The new Baseball stadium is nice, more notably is Target Plaza, the…[Read more] -

Check with the MNASLA – they had a map of downtown with projects at the annual meeting.
map apps would be awesome: an ASLA national project? or maybe a TCLF project? anyone? It would be a great marketing tool for us.
In germany every major city has a waterproof map of significant projects available at local bookstores, was great to have such a resource.

I give my pro-bono services to the local land trust (who runs community gardens) and to the local chapter of Architecture for Humanity (something I think more LAs should look into – they have an open source website for designs Open Architecture Network – to exchange ideas as well). As AfH’s mission is to provide general design services to those…[Read more]

I appreciate the choice of change in the ground plane over architectural objects- a sign maybe that LA’s have a better chance in future projects. “Phenomenology of moving rocks” has me puzzled though – an homage to all the earthwork when creating the park?

If it is electronic and you can shuffle and re-form it easily (edit), customize it for the position that you are going for. If there is a job description, balance the content toward that job description, but include a little of everything else. If there is no job description, look at the company web page and try to weight it toward what they…[Read more]
