Well, she offered me the job, and I didn’t negotiate at all.  Right off the bat I was offered $43k plus benefits.  Sounded good to me (especially after all the responses I got on here).  I would have felt weird/greedy asking for more.

This is to all the new grads out there: don’t be scared.  If you think you’re worth something then go for it.…[Read more]

Thanks a lot Jonathan!  I know that I regularly fall into the “getting timid trap” and I wanted to avoid this this time.

Is it better to ask for an offer in writing before we discuss salary?

I want to avoid canned “car-salesman” responses to salary questions, any suggestions?  (sorry can’t resist a joke)

I don’t know if this is at all what you mean, but where I worked it was primarily from RFP’s and reputation.

Danielle: you were “one of them”  lol…

  • ykonwanderer replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 10 years ago

Well somewhere on here I told people to come up here to take a job if they think the situation sounds so sweet.  It was sarcasm obviously, but should still be in here somewhere…

Lol – yes, if we want to cling to the paltriest of semantics while at the same time disregarding my acknowledgement in the above post…

haha, well I will say that my online persona is substantially more warrior-like than my real-life persona.  But we can head into cyber-battle together anytime!

  • ykonwanderer replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 10 years ago

I never once said, anywhere, that I think I should get low 50’s.  I asked – once – if 50k was too much to hope for.

I have repeatedly said that I am hoping for mid to low 40’s, which is well within the entry level range I found on those websites.  Keep in mind pay depends much more on where you find the work rather than where you go to scho…[Read more]

nrschmid: Well call me old fashioned, but I don’t send documents that can identify me over the internet for thousands of people to see, and I certainly don’t send them “privately” to a complete stranger who has really not done anything at all to gain my trust or goodwill.

Hmm…interesting.  Why should I send you examples of my work when you won’t offer the same give and take on here to others?  Sending someone samples of work is infinitely more personal than giving some generic figures.
    Does not compute.

That’s one person’s opinion, and her whole blog is pretty much full of doomsday scenarios.  She is a bit of a peak oil “kook”…not terribly reputable and I’m surprised she is being given such a platform on this guys show.  Ok, maybe I’m not surprised considering…

  • ykonwanderer replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 10 years ago

But I’m not interviewing here.  I have repeatedly said why I don’t want to show my work to you.  Furthermore, I’m not on here looking for validation for my skills, or looking to prove to you that I know my stuff.  I have been using GIS for 7 years, so what?  I’m not competing with *you* so why do you care how good I am or not?

  • ykonwanderer replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 10 years ago

Wrong again.  I’m beginning to see why you are unemployed.  Poor, poor reading comprehension, or a pig-headed refusal to accept what someone else has repeatedly said, an inability to recognize what the situation is, or all three at the same time.

Some points you repeatedly fail to understand:
    1) I have never said my skills *demand* a higher sa…[Read more]

Thanks Nick, but the funny thing is, no where in my posts have I said I am expecting an “unusually higher than average” salary – I simply said I hoped I could get a little bit higher than average if possible, and was looking for advice on how to do that.

  • ykonwanderer replied to the topic Salary Question in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 10 years ago

    Yes, you are correct Jennifer.

The reason I have not been looking to line up other jobs yet  is because (1) I am admittedly a very bad procrastinator, (2) I have been feverishly working to bring my portfolio up to scratch, and (3) I did not think I would be contacting the firm so soon this semester, I did so because people on here were fr…[Read more]

Yes, I know that I should deflect the question, and this should be obvious, because I just asked what is the best way to do that.  Online all you get is a bunch of fake sounding canned car-salesman answers.
