haha, great story!
I do think our regions are different though. I think in general the whole country is not as saturated as the U.S. is with landscape architects, it’s a much smaller community (only one or two BLA programs) and our economy is doing much better. -

Thank you Nick! Yes – a person can be humble and respectful and also know their worth!

yes, I emailed her last week and now regret it – I wish I had given myself more time to try to line up another offer, because she is “eager to have me back” and I am supposed to call her “at my earliest convenience”.
I feel like this is going to be almost a game of chicken. Who’s going to dive first?
I just have no idea what to expect du…[Read more] -

If they offer me what? If they offer me low-mid $40’s then yes I will take it. If they low-ball me then I will not take it. I know from past years of experience that if I feel like I am not being paid fairly at the going rate or fairly compensated for my skills than I am miserable, and I have worked too hard since returning to school to be mi…[Read more]

Thomas: Although what you say does make sense to me, I’ve also been told that companies like to see how your skills have improved over the course of time, and so to include some older projects. You think this is bad advice?

yes, yes, yes, you have said the same thing time and again. More lecturing about humbleness, lowering my expectations, and the shitty economy.
Other people have kindly offered figures, taking into consideration the different economic situation in Canada, the different cost of living, and the higher inflation rate/prices across the b…[Read more] -

I’ll just have to play it by ear I guess. -

Although the argument started off relatively well (I think our neighbourhoods can sometimes be over-designed and over-regulated), he doesn’t seem to have any logic to his arguments later on:
“I am thankful that I live in a place that offers a sense of space, yet is not too distant from neighbors and services. I am especially thankful for…[Read more] -

Anyone remember this little sketch that appeared in an edition of Land Arch magazine (unfortunately I don’t even know what year it was), that was a satire of all the landscape architecture cliches? I can remember it was a plan of a property, and there was a “sun-dried tomato growing area” labelled, and a whole bunch of other things like that.…[Read more]

Do you mean essentially using Arc Catalogue to create GIS shapefiles from drafted Civil 3d points lines and polygons? You can’t do that with regular autocad?
And haha, yes Civil 3d has a whole bunch of tools that are way beyond me… -

If you get the book “Sketch Up for Site DEsign” by Daniel Tal there are many invaluable shortcuts and a great chapter on acquiring and using plugins.

My vote is also for Sketch Up. Really really fast learning curve, and then eventually advanced users can do some pretty good models and renderings.

It’s been out there for a few months. I spoke to some ex coworkers over x-mas break and the offer was there for me to work over the holidays if I wanted to. I declined because the office is way too far away from my home, and I didn’t feel like trying to come up with accommodations for such a short amount of time.
And yes I am going to be con…[Read more] -

Please. You don’t know who my employers are, what they have told me, where my skills fit in to the equation, and you have obviously been selectively reading snippets of this thread (or you have chosen to only comment on the negatives).
For some reason you are under the impression that I would tell the company I don’t like their work? For so…[Read more] -

Who are you to tell me what I should and should not show on here? Land8 is many things besides simply a “portfolio extension”, and if some people choose to show their work than that is great. You need to respect others who do not wish to show their work.

There was a review of this book in Landscape Architecture magazine a little while back right? I didn’t attend the event, but the book sounded pretty good in the review at least. I seem to remember reading that the magazine found the guidelines very comprehensive, they focus on maintainable and sustainable parks, but I think I also read that some…[Read more]
