I disagree with y ou, Tanya..I think the environmental movement has bent over backwards to please ranchers and hunters, and to incorporate them – there was in fact a distinct change in the composition of such groups as Ducks Unlimited and The nature Conservancy, as they did actually incorporate those types of values..Look at who the Secretary of…[Read more]

Tanya, That last sentence is huge.
Another huge problem is that we’ll shut down anything and everything in our country, particularly non-recreational utilization of natural resources, while we turn a blind eye to other countries who are far less careful of protecting the environment as we continue to use the products from their practices that far…[Read more]

At least in the US, failure to meaningfully connect in a culturally significant way to conservative conservationists – ie. outdoor sportspeople – hunters, fishers, other outdoor rec people. They’ve tended to look down their noses at ATVs and motorboats which hasn’t made any new friends. They’ve also alienated USFS management and forest resources…[Read more]

The “Grean Movements” biggest mistake has been a failure to connect conservation and sustainability to financial profitability. Historically, greens have been associated with wanting to put the brakes on “civilization” and “progress” in order to protect the environment from the destructive forces of human influence. This is a losing battle. Money…[Read more]

If you’d like some insight into that particular program a former classmate of mine went to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for his masters degree (I believe in Landscape Architecture). He is a Danish citizen and could give you some good insight into the program and his personal experience. Cheers.

As I understand it was coined by a group critical of the separation of the understanding ecological processes and urban processes. It is/was an attempt to allow for urban designs to accommodate both the human constructs and the necessary ecological processes. It is the first “wave” of reexamining the profession from a performance perspective…[Read more]

Kongjian Yu and Adrian Geuze both write about the need for their respective countries to embrace their placeness and fight the trend toward adopting outside aesthetics at the cost of local traditions base on local needs (below see level, river flood cycles, etc). While at Turenscape in Beijing there was some frustration expressed about the desire…[Read more]

Regarding government jobs: Hooray for all who remain in private practice and hats off to all who remain in the private sector even if it’s not Landscape Architecture. Starting a year before graduating (2009) I visited offices, showed my portfolio in progress and tried to get a feel for what firms were out there and what they were looking for. It definitely helped me prepare myself to assess a firm’s needs and sell myself as a good option for them. While I had very little luck initially, I’ve been able to get a…[Read more]

You can’t grab employment in a down economy.
It will have to grab you. All you can do is to make yourself desirable to those who are doing the grabbing. It starts with assessing what skill sets are actually being hired rather than loading up with what is perceived to make you more valuable. No one hires a lawyer to dig a ditch and no one hires a…[Read more]
