Spot elevations / grading are the only thing I would do in decimal form. Everything else I’d do in architectural. I think it all depends on who is using the drawing. Surveyors are going to want to use decimals. Contractors / laborers (using tape measures) generally want to use architectural.
This discrepancy is yet another reason we should toss…[Read more]

I generally work in decimal for plan layout as most of the work is being done in conjunction with engineers/surveyors. Vertical construction I generally use architectural.

I work for a state department of transportation that spent 5 to ten years transforming everything they had to metric, in the nineties, because we had a mandate from our federal government to change with the times! We then discovered that no-one else had changed to metric, and we had a really hard time with contractors bidding in metric, they just…[Read more]

I vote for ‘Grade Easy’ too. Otherwise, go gather some used cardboards and starts building contour model. That is the best way to learn grading.

Use what was there before the concrete. Keep it natural. Reduce outside or foreign species to below 10%. Remember there are prone species as with juniper. As for maintenance, keep tidy, Other than that, give me the job!

Buy a mah jong set and read the instructions. Create a grass or flower dragon – an imperial one from the old days. Allow for cold and wet weather gatherings with a temple area covering buddhism and more. Insert gas on meters for open air heaters and flares and even gas collectors making methane and fertilizer. Have open covered area with…[Read more]

Airports use bird scarers consisting large birds of prey – they come round couple times during daylight and exercise their eagle owl, eagle or whatever. They should be in pages under pest control. Alternatively own and train own eagle. I always wanted an andean condor the only bird in the world to deliberately attack light aircraft. However i…[Read more]

There are quite a number of commercially available rabbit repellents. Google and ye shall find.
But if the rabbit population gets large enough, they will have little choice unless there is another landscape they can eat.

I was a TA in grading and drainage when I was in school and tutored someone just last year. Almost all the stress and problems came back to the same thing. That is slope = rise/run or vertical/horizontal (s=v/h). More specifically, it is understanding what you know and what you are trying to calculate for. A huge percentage of people get…[Read more]

To my knowledge the difference derives from what ‘College’ your University has classified Landscape Architecture under. I graduated BSLA from an Accredited program and am licensed. Originally, the program was accredited but not a B.S. It moved over to the College of Ag Science to receive an increased budget and greater access to computer labs.…[Read more]

It makes all the difference in the world when you go to take the licensing test in your state. If your degree is not accredited by LAAB, you do not qualify to sit for the exam after 3 years of practice or so. It will take you 10 years or so to become qualified. A BSLA is not accredited and is not a professional degree, whereas a BLA is accredited…[Read more]

I second the 4″ grinder as being effective if you are not making a career out of ot. Br sure to set it up so that the dust shoots away from you are you cut or you will toast the grinder a lot faster. When it gets real hot, give it a rest or you’l burn it out. Start on the far side of the cut on the first grind because as soon as the dust flies you…[Read more]

Keith, I’m not really having any problems specifically. I’m more so just looking for reference material to study and refer to when a problem arises.
Thanks Kellie, I will definitely look into some of those books.

Hi Jared,
I know exactly what you mean. Here I found the book you already referenced helpful. Here are some others from my Site Grading class course list.
Hope it helps,
cheers,

For 1″ bluestone you can get by with a 4″ grinder and a good diamond blade. Sakrete is weak as mentioned. I would use 5 shovel masonry sand, 1 shovel Portland cement, .5 shovel lime ratio mix. The sand is important. If its the wrong type, you won’t get the loft necessary and it will make levelling the patio very difficult. The consistency of the…[Read more]

I don’t think it really matters on a resume. I don’t think someone would rather hire someone with a BLA than a BSLA.
