LEED certification in direct application to landscape architects and if there are any other certification which will add to our qualifications and “tool box”

All Inclusive Design 15 years, 8 months agoHi Chad – What got me interested in Inclusive design? You’re right, it was my work with therapeutic gardens, especially gardens in the healthcare setting. But then branching out from that, thinking about taking the design principles used for therapeutic gardens in places of healing and broadening to other places where people play and learn. Tara…[Read more]

SketchUp 15 years, 8 months agoI’m really stumped on the whole photo match feature in SU. I have a project where I need to show a new streetscape design meshed with a photo of the existing street and I can’t for the life of me get photo match to work right. I have viewed several of the tutorial videos on YouTube but I am just not able to get the origin or the axis to come out…[Read more]

Nick,
You were very much a design/build landscape designer long before you went to school for LA. I’m interested to know if you feel like you have made a fundamental change in what you are thinking when you take on a project now rather than prior to school.I was at it quite a while before getting my degree. I think Tom was as well, if I’m not…[Read more]

I don’t necessarily think your role in the design process changes in the flip of a switch as you become a licensed ‘Landscape Architect.’ Good designers also think about constructability, but certainly with a lesser sense of responsibility. Passage of the LARE in the United States by definition makes you legally entitled and qualified to call…[Read more]

It is true. The LARE is the purest definition of “Landscape Architect”. If you cannot satisfy the requirements of the exam, then you are not a Landscape Architect. You can be a Landscape Architect and also a painter, furnishing designer, illustrator, etc. etc. but if you have not passed the LARE then you are a painter, furnishing designer,…[Read more]

I was out there about a month ago, one of the places that I really enjoyed was Rock Creek Park near the National Zoo. Another little place that was nice to just walk through was a little garden strip just east of the Smithsonian Castle (the US Capital side). It’s not going to blow you aways by the design of the place but it is great in terms of…[Read more]

It is not about paying to make sure that it is graded fairly. It is initially graded independently by two graders who do not make any marks on the paper at all. Supposedly, they typically find the same errors. If they don’t, a “Master Grader” takes another shot at it to resolve what the correct grade is.
The red line review is an additional…[Read more]

The issue is, you shouldn’t HAVE to pay to make sure your test was graded correctly, or even to see what you did wrong. It should be all or nothing. Either no one gets to see the tests, or everyone does, for free.
No, life is not fair, but life shouldn’t be made unfair because the people giving the licensing test I need to take want to make cash…[Read more]

I second the statement that most want the license as soon as they can get it. I waited a few years in practice and it was worth it. I doubt I could have passed if I took it right when I became eligible to. I made sure I knew exactly what the heck I was doing before I sat for the test, and made it through with no problems. Was it easy, no. I’ve…[Read more]
