The issue is, you shouldn’t HAVE to pay to make sure your test was graded correctly, or even to see what you did wrong. It should be all or nothing. Either no one gets to see the tests, or everyone does, for free.
No, life is not fair, but life shouldn’t be made unfair because the people giving the licensing test I need to take want to make cash…[Read more]

I second the statement that most want the license as soon as they can get it. I waited a few years in practice and it was worth it. I doubt I could have passed if I took it right when I became eligible to. I made sure I knew exactly what the heck I was doing before I sat for the test, and made it through with no problems. Was it easy, no. I’ve…[Read more]

My reccomendations as a local:
Kogod Courtyard in the Smithsonian American Art/Portrait Gallery (Sir Norman Foster w/ Gustavson Guthrie Nichol) – Hopefully they will have the water scrims fixed by then
Dumbarton Oaks – Beatrix Farrand
US Capitol Grounds – F L Olmsted
FDR Memorial – Halprin
National Gallery Sculpture Garden – Olin

Hi Sam,
I don’t know whether you’ve been to DC or not, but I found the article in the July issue of the LA magazine quite helpful. It lists all the basic attractions and seems like a good place to start. I think you can download the article from the ASLA website (annual meeting section maybe?). Hope to see you there!

I hope it makes you feel better that two of the most original and creative landscape architectural designers I know failed and failed and failed. One is a highly respected practitioner and professor, another worked for one of the big three mid century LAs and was a partner in a firm for years before he could pass that state’s LARE. Another good…[Read more]

I get that, but how does LARE help define the profession in other countries? Certainly, we would all agree that landscape architecture is practiced at the same level of proficiency as it is here, across the globe. What was landscape architecture before CLARB?
I get you point and agree. If we’re only looking for a nationally (sort of) legal…[Read more]

Most of us want to get licensed as soon as possible to be a member of the profession. I sure did. The perspective is one from our own sense of self worth as being a member of the profession working in the profession. We have to remember that the primary reason behind licensure is not about career advancement or joining a club. It is supposedly to…[Read more]

so simply defining the practice and craft by one’s ability to earn licensure seems a little silly..
I agree, my point was semantics…and legalese. Passing the exam does not make you a LA. Because of practice and title laws, it is a separate piece of paper (with a fee, of course) make you a LA in the eyes of government and the industry. But one…[Read more]

Tanya,
You are correct in what I meant.
I looked through an old notebook tonight and found the redline review trifold from back in the day “L.A.R.E. Review Procedures”. You had to be in a secure room with a monitor, no notes, no materials with you at all, maximum of one hour, and only one review per section (no other review in subsequent…[Read more]

There are all kinds of things that can accurately describe what landscape architects do. My point is that these do not define the licensed profession of landscape architecture in 46 states and a couple provinces. Only LARE defines the common criteria between all of those licensed LAs, thus it defines the root profession of landscape architecture…[Read more]

Ok, so what is your point, Jason?
Experince + education + exam in most states that I know of = license. My point is that the exam doesn’t test for the less tangible aspects of a landscape archs expertise and experience, so simply defining the practice and craft by one’s ability to earn licensure seems a little silly… though still perfectly…[Read more]

The legal definition is not someone who passes the exam, as the exam is only a metric. The legal definition, which actually varies by state, is that a Landscape Architect is LICENSED to perform specific duties by said state. Yes, you do need to take the exam to get a license, but those rules set by a state. They do not specifically need to require…[Read more]

Laura,
I just passed A after being out of school and away from a firm for 13 years. I studied all the available tests, read all of the books (five of them, I think. available on interlibrary loan) on the reading list and researched everything on the ppi that i did not know all about. (even the wrong answers). I also looked at project manuals. I…[Read more] -

From Wikipedia:
Architecture (Latin architectura, from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων – arkhitekton, from ἀρχι- “chief” and τέκτων “builder, carpenter”) can mean:
The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures.
The practice of an architect, where architecture means to offer or render professional services i…[Read more] -

After reading this discussion, it seems to be heading into ‘why I do not like CLARB and LARE.” I want to state, that as a licensed LA, CLARB member and sole practitioner. Andrew, the pass rates for the June administration of the graphic tests were nowhere near 70%. Section C (site design) had a pass rate of 58%. Section E (grading) was 37%. These rates have been consistently this low for at least the last 6 years. Are these dismal pass rates comparable to the engineering and architectural licensing exams?
I just…[Read more]
