Public work: Banks dont lend, developers dont spend = no work for any design professionals,(much less or more, LAs).
Private work: Hard to spend on improving your residence’s landscape when you’re tying to put food on the table. Clients become the more fortunate or the money markets still intact after the meltdown…
just my 2 cents..

I did see the holocaust memorial, and it’s something that doesn’t translate in photos. You have to be there to get it. My little find was a set of grass berms about 10 ft high constructed with reinforcing bars in the middle of Potsdamerplatz by the Renzo Piano buildings. People were just hanging out lying on the lawns and kids were running up and…[Read more]

We are still stalling, quibbling..It will never happen..State and Federal Highway Dept. have the same goal as ever – move more cars faster, and as far as they are concerned, in fifty years they will still be moving more cars faster..
That’s one of the things that caused me to experience cognitive dissonance about my job with a state DOT.
I can’t…[Read more]

I’m trying to say that LA’s get very little based on being LA’s, but the idividual or firms are as limited or empowered as their own history and experience. The sky is the limit, but we can’t reach the sky without standing on a foundation equally as strong as the next person of our profession or any other who is trying to touch the same place in…[Read more]

Disagree, Jason, no surprise – I think we often disagree. Roads, gasoline, suburb construction (driving oriented ) have been heavily subsidized for decades – Amtrak gets nothing, pratically in comparison..If you read the comments on this article, a couple of the posters laid out the subsidization inequality pretty well..I l ove Amtrak, take it all…[Read more]

The major issue with rail is the cost. Look at slAmtrak. It loses VAST quantities of taxpayer money due to insane overhead costs, which include labor and equipment maintenance. Most routes are subsidized, as they cannot make money whatsoever. Even in very dense urban areas, the metro rail or subway systems also bleed money. Private enterprise used…[Read more]

and that’s how I learned that you can’t swear here. And knowing is half the battle.
But seriously folks. Andrew, I do think you’re on to something. I don’t think it’s unique to our industry or even creative fields, but the creative nature of our industry does seem to magnify the challenge of creating a team where personalities can gel…[Read more]

I’m currently living in the tiny town of Moscow, ID. To the south is Lewiston, ID near Hell’s Canyon and the Snake River. To the north is Lake Coeur d’Lene. I think it would be nice to hop on a train with my folding bike, get off in Coeur d’lene or Lewiston and ride around on the trails. Sure I can do this in my car, but then I have to pay for…[Read more]

there are many styles of writing, might depend on the format and audience.
for me it’s casual here on the computer, (unless emailing to clients or for business etc)… but this is like email, spelling is important, but perfect grammar? naww… why take out all the fun on a social network site?
being abrasive, condescending or brutish should be…[Read more]

That makes sense, and sorry we keep rehashing this argument.
What I’m interpreting from your post is that LA’s are very unlikely prime consultants in the development world?

Hiring managers are emotional creatures too. My boss has outbursts and streaks of obnoxious behavior and so so I. We deal with it. He purportedly knew when he hired me that our personalities were vastly different, but he hired me because I produce lots of work and I have the ability to learn.
Frankly, I find it refreshing when someone in the…[Read more]

Personality is everything, skill sets can be tought, but likable can’t. I don’t care how talented you are if I don’t think you have the proper chemistry I will not hire you. By the way not everyone is cut out for client contact. I have individuals who work great with the staff, but do not do well with my clients.

I made my pages in PShop as well (InDesign just fights fine tuning a little to much sometimes, and you can’t do the same image tweaks, which my new layout really needed). I made mine 11×17 300 dpi, so when it comes time, I can print them hardcopy at a kickass res. Then I resized to 100 dpi in photoshop, and printed the page to PDF. Doing it this…[Read more]

This is a complete overhaul from what I had been using, and I’m hoping it provides the right balance of pop and professionalism- something to make it stand out, while showing that I can put together a decent board/sheet once I am hired.
Let me know…[Read more]
