hi, best to avoid heated opinions that do not pertain to the task at hand… having patience is sublime and simple, the greatest of all inaction…
its okay to discuss politics politely with an open mind, but i never let political views get in the way of friendships and professional relationships… after all, we are grown up enough to think for…[Read more]

hi i’m cliff, although i dont work for a firm at the moment either, i would say a good way to advance yourself “within a company” then of course is taking on responsibility that others don’t want, you will get promoted and be admired for taking on tough challenges.
it also depends on your taste, and where you want to commit your skills, maybe its…[Read more]

I sat in his last class at LSU for my final semester a few months ago. I am glad I did. It meant alot.

I would say almost all of the above! Everything except getting the advanced degree. In my 4 years out in the working world I’ve really tried to delve in to all the stuff they don’t teach at school…networking with other professionals, learning about subject matter not directly included in landscape architecture, emerging green technologies, etc.…[Read more]

Doc was an amazing man….we should all be so blessed to live a life as full as his! I’m sorry I wasn’t able to attend his memorial service; it sounded like it was a wonderful tribute to his inspiring life. Rest in peace doc.

I never share ideas on politics, religion, or anything else that is polarizing when on the job. I stick strictly to “safe” subjects. My car is unmarked, and on the few occasions when someone at the office has asked me about my views, I’ve simply declined to discuss it in the nicest way I could. Unless it is part of the design program, I don’t see…[Read more]

Great feedback William.
I appreciate the format and delivery too. Effective criticism is a skill.
I have LOTS of other work and I’ll be making the changes you mention.
Thanks.

Great stuff, Nick.
My humbly-offered two cents:
1) Photos of installed work (if available)
2) Challenge: distill sheet descriptions to 3 short bullets (and I think 12 pt minimum)
3) No pixelated imagery
4) Any construction document examples?* Love the process work
* Great ideas on display
* Talent and heart -

I have very strong political views I, and I have a play it by ear attitude on mixing politics and work. This mostly goes for coworkers though. For example I worked in a small architecture office during the 2008 election and the principles had me hang a large Obama poster on the wall. It was the first thing you saw when you walked in. Needless to…[Read more]

I generally try to keep things like politics and religion at home and I try very hard to not discuss those topics in the work place or in the field. You just never know who you are going to encounter, but there are times where you can let your views stand out. If you have a good relationship with a client/coworker/contractor then it might be…[Read more]

Why get an MLA then, if there is no pay increase?
I can buy and read a lot of books for $80,000 and not expect a pay increase either… What’s the point? Why do people get MLAs then? They love the debt? It’s a way to avoid the real world for two more years?

If you want to display your fellings you have to be prepared for reaction. I don’t think it is wrong to display your political feelings, but you have to know that feedom is a dialogue and not a monologue. Celebrating a position is much like anteing up in a poker game – maybe no one else chips in, but someone may raise you and call. As long as you…[Read more]

Yeah, I’d love to see it too.
Of course, he seems to be accusing certain applications of failing to meet goals… not all. It does speak to the necessity to design systems specifically to do these “green” jobs rather than simply throwing up a green roof.
And then there’s the issue of performance over time.
I really would like to see more long…[Read more] -

Do you have his report? I can’t seem to find it. I’d love to see his numbers to back up his statement. Curious if he’s trying to discredit other systems in order to push his.
Here’s some additional info:

Yeah, the basal system is the one I’m remembering. Haven’t heard any more about it or looked into it further, but am guessing the added weight costs would be of concern with owners. Plus, having a full-time bath tub overhead might scare a few people as well.
