Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic To Beard or not to Beard? That is the question… in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 12 months ago
That seems weird to me. I could see if you had some weird beard pattern, but clearly you don’t. Maybe there was a problem with others having a particular look and rather than singling anyone out they just made a no beard policy? Could it have been a setup to see if you say yes to everything in a job interview? … or maybe it is for real.

I’m in a civil office and it is a very secure position to be in this economy. I do a liitle bit of survey design/drafting, a little bit of landscape design, a little bit of environmental restoration, a lot of cicil site plans, …. what part of that is not landscape architecture?

They change their business model to adjust to regulation for one. Regulation does need to happen to one degree or another and you can definitely be involved in that either by career choice or by being an active citizen.
Another reason to change a business model is when the success stops happening, such as right now. This is a time when some lay…[Read more] -

The biggest road block is that you are trying to sell to bigger developers who have actually built and sold quite a bit and have learned their own ideas of marketability/profitability through their own experience and profit/loss. Would it seem logical that they would put that aside and trust in the vision of people who have not actually done…[Read more]

Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic How did you get that job? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 12 months ago
Getting in front of people is the most important. I learned that showing up unannounced annoys people. Calling to arrange a meeting is often unproductive. I needed to find a way to make it easy to let me in.
I put a list together of every LA within my limited geographic area (where there are no big firms). Then I made up several resume/portfolio…[Read more] -
Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Is Your Planting Evocative or Provocative? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 12 months ago
I apologize for not re-reading the blog that was referenced after the initial time I looked at this thread. You defined what you meant ny evocative and provocative and it really is a very interesting subject. By your definition, I do “evocotive” plantings almost all of the time.
Perhaps rain gardens are often some of the more “provocative” p…[Read more] -

I like to think it is responsive.
The work “provocative” is often taken to mean the generation of negative actions and that might make people confused and hesitant to respond. I’m no linguist, so I’m unclear on exactly what is being asked, also.
If provocative is to mean that it causes people to take a specific action, I would say that this w…[Read more] -
Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic What is the best format for a cover letter – blank verse or iambic pentameter. in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years ago
One way is to write your cover letter like a personal letter straight from yourself. Any other way is going to present something other than you. If it is a tried and true method that everyone is talking about, it will sound like everyone else who is jumped on the bandwagon.
If everyone else sounds like a marketing pitch and you do the same, you’ll…[Read more] -

Jon,
You really need to have a cover letter that quickly covers the things that you have been doing. It seems that you got to rent space in an engineer’s office, get bid work on commercial jobs, collaborated with other LA (s) over a distance, … anyone can appreciate that this is high performance from someone who has not interned, lives in a…[Read more] -

It is like calling someone and getting the answering. If you leave a message and no one gets back to you, you look like a jerk if you keep leaving messages. If you hang up before leaving a message, you can keep calling back util someone picks up the phone.

Make the contact, stay in touch often, and let him make the move on the job front. If he needs help he’ll ask you if you are interested. If you ask and he is not not ready, he’ll say no – then things will be awkward as far as you staying in touch. He is going to know that you want a job, so why put him on the spot?

Actually, there is a 3% surcharge on all property taxes within the town that is earmarked for affordable housing amongst other things (historic preservation, open space, and recreational projects) which would be in addition to this mitigation, had it gone through.

It was not the town. It is “a regional land use planning and regulatory agency that eas created in 1990 to serve the citizens of the 15 towns of Barnstable County”. This town has come close to getting out of it’s jurisdiction on at least one occaision. Elsewhere is not an option unless they move it more than 30 miles and four towns away because it…[Read more]

Housing was a big problem here a few years ago as vacation homes were selling like hot cakes and being flipped left and right. Few people rented out homes to year ’round workers because they could rent out by the week in the summer and save a couple of weeks for their own use and get the same money. There was a big shortage of labor, so many…[Read more]
