James that’s funny(odd) everyone I interview with wants the 3D, visual effects, photoshop person as well as designer…we didn’t learn much of that in school(it wasn’t the trend yet). Working 12-16 hour days doesn’t exactly allow much time for additional education 🙁
May 11, 2011 at 5:54 pm #163569Catherine J ThompsonParticipantIt’s not your talent, it’s the pay grade….at least that’s what I’m finding. They want my years/experience for first year pricing, which is well below the cost of living here (high!)
April 26, 2011 at 5:14 pm #163594Catherine J ThompsonParticipantI didn’t start this thread to engage hostility…I genuinely wanted to know…
April 23, 2011 at 4:32 pm #163608Catherine J ThompsonParticipantI’ve worked for design-build…not just a nursery. That company was owned by an LA but he was grandfathered in, and second generation owner…draw your own conclusions. I’ve found that db firms with LA owners are doing it all themselves, not wanting to take on another designer, lower overhead. I’ve also found that the MLA and LARE doesn’t necessarily get you better salary or prestige within the working community…that seems to only hold weight with the civilian clientele…
I also dont trust craigslist…I’ve been scammed before 🙁April 20, 2011 at 11:11 pm #163612Catherine J ThompsonParticipantWow! A lot more responses than I expected! Thanks! I’m not looking to go on my own, for a few reasons…one I don’t have the capital for the ‘build’ portion, and people around here are stingy about paying for designs, also I don’t want to get pinned down in this location. If I started a business here, I’m here for life, at this moment that is not appealing to me at all…
Thanks for all the info folks! Keep it coming!April 20, 2011 at 12:11 pm #163619Catherine J ThompsonParticipantReally? DC huh?
April 20, 2011 at 12:09 pm #163620Catherine J ThompsonParticipantNo specifically trying to stay in Chicago…I honestly feel like this place has sucked the life out of me! I’d be willing to move and learn new things, no problem.
March 24, 2010 at 9:03 pm #170806Catherine J ThompsonParticipantWell i’m just starting out (on the testing…not the industry) so really anything you’re willing to part with….

I’ve heard good and bad things about both the flashcards and the ppi materials…..i think it doesn’t help that the materials themselves may be getting outdated a bit, and the fluctuation of testing questions….
