I’ve been thinking about proposing landscape improvements to the College of Alameda in Alameda, CA – they need it! what a depressing campus. I’m sorry, but it is true. Anyone have any experience doing this? pro-bono even?

I am volunteering at the UCSF Cancer Resource Center at the Mt. Zion campus – I found it actually difficult to find volunteer work, seems to be a popular idea. Working at the CRC has been great, even if it isn’t industry related.

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic What does your home landscape look like? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 4 months ago
yep – goes without saying! I consider myself lucky to have a garden at all, it has been a tremendous help to me in professional practice at least in residential work. I often find that I know/understand plants better than my employers.

I also live in an apartment, but one with a big patio, 3 Redwood trees (which was a bad idea executed by someone else) and a Tibouchina. I use it as a testing area too, since I don’t own this garden, I am just renting the space. I grow all sorts of things but I am not all that great about keeping up on the maintenance so it is weedy. Many of my…[Read more]

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic What are hiring managers looking for? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 4 months ago
I was recently in the same situation. I was more expensive and experienced than someone who’d been with the firm 2 years (I had been there 4 months) and I was spared when she was laid off … all because of personality differences, and there is NOTHING wrong with the personality of the woman who was laid off.

I would hope that in addition to whatever the position requires, that they’d be looking for skills that are currently lacking (or want improvement) in that office AND a person/personality that is someone who would bring a positive influence, good attitude, and the ability to get along with others! is there a credential for that? I can bring THAT.…[Read more]

I just googled “cemetery design” and found these two web pages:
http://www.iccfa.com/tag/cemetery-design
http://www.iccfasupplylink.com/results.php?category=Construction/Design&heading=248I hope those links work, I plan to spend some time this weekend plodding through them and looking for further information.
Thanks for starting the discussion,…[Read more] -

dang. Well, I will keep track of this thread so I can bug you or Chris if I ever get to work on another. I did some minor work on one back in school. We had guidelines for the project that are long since lost.

I, too, would love to know what resources people who are actively involved in the cemetery field learn the ins and outs of it. I’ve seen several books on specific cemeteries, but so far, not one book on design guidelines. Are they just ALL different? Did you learn what you know entirely on the job, or is there some resource available?

Jennifer de Graaf posted an update in the group Employment Storytelling 15 years, 6 months ago
I remembered another company policy I heard about. There is a company that has a pre-review meeting about 3 months before the employee’s annual review. Someone who is a superior (but not everyone involved in the formal review process) discusses the employee’s strengths and weaknesses with him/her and offers suggestions for improvement. Three…[Read more]

I do think that certain comments in this group could be dangerous – I suggest that if someone has a story to tell that could get them in trouble that they ask a friend to post it for them or post it as though they heard it somewhere else. My intent is to illuminate both sides for the benefit of all.
On that note, I will share a few company…[Read more]

Thanks for starting this, Theodore! I know this is hot stuff already in engineering, but there isn’t enough information on it as applies to LA.

I pretty much never read letters. I get marketing letters all the time and the moment I know it is marketing, I toss it, sometimes without opening! Postcards are already opened, so to speak. Looking at it on the walk between the mail box and the front door is better than tossing without opening.

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic RLA vs. ASLA in the forum PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 15 years, 8 months ago
I agree with Chad above – I use RLA because I can’t afford to be a member of ASLA and RLA means I actually am a landscape architect where ASLA does not. If I had to sign drawings, ASLA membership wouldn’t do any good.
I believe all my professors in college were licensed landscape architects. Every one.

A place to post resumes. ASLA is $$$ and if land8lounge can do the same joblink thing cheaper, I would have a resume posted right now as opposed to not. I can’t afford ASLA’s rates for either membership or resume posting.
I disagree with Organic that it is bad to have your name attached to discussions. If users are not willing to own their…[Read more]

Jennifer de Graaf replied to the topic LA organizations doing all LA professionals a disservice. Wake up! in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 8 months ago
I completely disagree – I learn lots of new things and understand different perspectives through reading these forums. I would not be reading the forums at all if all I read was reiteration of my own views. If all we did was sit around and tell each other how wonderful we all were, there would be no reason to visit land8lounge besides pretty…[Read more]
