I would definitely use Photoshop for all of my vegetation.  I find that using sketchup for trees slows my computer down a lot. If I must have 3D trees I use sketchup or Rhino to create a basic mass model and then I texture it using Artlantis on a PC.  Artlantis trees are great and don’t really slow down the computer.  The only downside is that you have to purchase them and they might not have a specific tree.

I think that these days, everybody’s digital graphics look exactly the same.  They all have the cutout trees, desaturated people and so forth.  I think sketches really convey more emotion and add a personal style to a rendering.  Let’s face it, by now everybody knows sketchup and photoshop to the point where renderings are boring. It’s time to go back to hand graphics in a new way.  Throw out the standards from the 1950s and experiment with analog media instead of digital media.  Give clients not just a perspective of the design on a 24×36 board but a piece of artwork they can hang on their walls as part of your design package. Just my thoughts.

Well out here in California, my professors have been telling me that it’s starting to pick back up. I have to admit that I would definitely not want to work for free just to earn experience in some internship. I think that honest work deserves an honest paycheck regardless of age or work experience. It’s just part of my religion.

Landscape Plants for California Gardens by Bob Perry. Bob Perry was a professor of mine at Cal Poly Pomona last year. This is the greatest book for California Plants. It has all of the climate zones, water needs, plant factors, Eto calculations and sections of plant palettes with plants that work well together. An amazing book. It was great to have him sign my copy.
