thank you all for your input.  as i see it, the course would be for credit and the project would be managed by a licensed Landscape contractor with student labor as part of the course.  i will be in the situation that if the idea is accepted by the college, i would be the course instructor and handle the administration, with contractor coordination.  which would include all the organization of materials, donations, etc.

i believe that this experience would benefit the students in that they would have a better understanding of the function of the materials they are designing with; as well as give them a leg up on things when interning.

again, thank you all for your input.  i would love to hear from you all more if there is more advice.

Here is a bit of a twist with Kyle’s question, if not a MacBook Pro, then what PC laptop would meet or exceed the requirements?  I too am a Student and on my final year and would love to get a PC laptop that will last me 4-5 yrs plus.  but here is the kicker, desktop replacements are too heavy and battery life sucks so what are the professionals using to meet the software needs and remaining portable?

unfortunately, our society is of the mind that change is hard and we only do things the easy way.  i agree with your point here Heather.  i kick myself for not getting out of bed 30 minutes earlier to walk my own kids to school and head to UI myself.  i think it really comes down to making that personal choice to live smart and healthy.  and unfortunately we cannot change each other, only inspire.
