Thanks Henry.
I used to have my own landscape design-build business before I attended school, but it seems the market for landscapers is more flooded now. I’ve thought about hanging a shingle for landscape and graphic design services, as you said, to help with presentations and doing residential design on the side, but I can’t bring myself to put…[Read more]

nca replied to the topic what is good design? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 3 months ago
I try not to discern ‘good design’ from ‘bad design’ so much as places I’d like to visit or not.
I think there is a lot of ‘good design’ that makes for boring places. It’s a much smaller group of people that truly cares for the quality of design of a space than those who care for the more readily accessible qualities such as physical comfort,…[Read more]

Still, it doesn’t discount the fact that perhaps thousands of young and old architects and landscape architects alike will listen to and emulate the mentality exhibited in this video, staged or not.
I’d bet ten to one the folks over at Archinect are ‘discussing’ Martha’s comments and ripping into LA’s.

I feel like I see a lot more Lin graphics in LA than Leggits.
I actually prefer Leggits style over Lins, but agree that both styles are emulated much too closely and frequently in LA. I disagree that hand-drawn graphics are generally recieved better by ‘the people.’ Of course, it’s all relative, but there have been times in my limited experience…[Read more]

After actually watching the video I think Martha had some very pertinent points near the beginning, but perhaps lost a bit of self control, boiling over a bit toward the end- and rightly so. Alsop really stuck his foot in his mouth.
In response to the question regarding ‘why we should care,’ because people (archs and la’s alike) really do listen…[Read more]

I think Martha has somewhat of a reputation building behind her apparent disdain for architects (see DIA competition with Kurt Fentress)…not to say her grievances are unfounded. I think it’s probably healthy for the profession to have a few ‘booming’ voices like Schwartz. More and more it has become evident to me that it isn’t necessarily the…[Read more]

i’m a bit surprised by your first, most important point-‘personal appearance.’ Are you being facetious?

In looking at your profile Daryn I see that you have a good amount of experience, so your question may be less generalized than I assumed. I’m looking forward to what the more experienced members have to say.
My thought is that it seems like the discussions on accreditation here ultimately boil down to the marketability of particular…[Read more]

I’ve missed out on the last week or so of replies on this thread because I was out dangling myself off mountain sides, fording rivers, and sleeping in remote wilderness.
Anyway, I think everyone brought up great points. The question stands, where is the line?
Roland, you once again bring up a great point regarding perception. I think perception…[Read more]

As far as students not using trace…I wish I could have shown you my desk last semester.
My limited experience with ‘group think’ was nearly disasterous. From what I observed, it is nearly impossible for everyone to draw at the same time. There’s always a dominant pen and I think it’s fair to say that those with good ideas, but without ability…[Read more]

I think there is either a widespread miscommunication between employers and job candidates or hiring managers may be sending mixed messages regarding desirable skills and marketability.

It seems like it’s not so much an issue of drawing with a pen vs. digital rendering as much as attention to craft.
I think there are ways to ‘throw’ people into hand drawings and create dull marker renderings just as easy as it is to do this digitally. Given digital methods probably make doing so easier.
The fundamentals which reach beyond the…[Read more]

Good points Adam..
I think one issue that could be argued from the ‘analog’ camp is that sense of scale may not be as accessible in solely digitlal design processes due mainly to the ability to zoom in or out at nearly an infinite number of levels. This goes back to the argument that in designing space, it is critical to have a grasp on scale,…[Read more]

Jay-
To be honest, I gave up submitting my portfolio about a month ago.
My first draft portfolio was 104 pages, cut it to about 75, and finally have it at about 50. I created it so it can only be viewed as spreads, so it flips pretty quick. I’ve had good feedback on the content and length. I’ve seen a lot of ptf’s around 15 pages that look great…[Read more]

I wouldn’t scale in indesign…set up the correct page size in your plot layout in cad or create new sheets to the appropriate size and make sure your printing at high quality from cad.
You can insert the pdf or flatten it in photoshop first and link a raster image (jpeg), which adds a step but ensures what you see is what you get.
Anyone ever…[Read more]
