Design Implementation 16 years agoTim, Jay, and others –
Just found this group, and am happy to see it exists. I am actually one of the Masters students you spoke about who is lacking direct landscape construction experience. I agree wholeheartedly with the comments, and see this as a huge problem. Do you have any suggestions on the best methods for acquiring this experience?…[Read more]

Design Implementation 16 years, 3 months agoJay,
I have run into similar situations in my work experience, (I’ve worked at 4 firms and have ten years + of construction experience) where registered LA’s are “designing” things but have no practical knowledge of how the thing will actually stand up or be built and a very narrow knowledge of construction in general. It seems often-times the old…[Read more] -

Design Implementation 16 years, 3 months agoHi Scott
I learned the ropes in the field prior to Licensure; I started at an ornamental tree farm then became manager and head of landscapeoperations, then lead designer, then partner in a design build firm, all the while not fulfilled in my carrer thinking that I took the wrong path by not stepping straight into a design firm. It wasnt until I…[Read more] -

Design Implementation 16 years, 4 months agoI would like to think that it is the LA who knows best, but sadly I feel that the contractor is the one who is going to be the key in creating the finished project. I would love to get to know my contractors well enough to find out there likes and dislikes but I never seem to be able to work with the same one over again, the market is so cutthroat…[Read more]

Landscapers Out of the Box 16 years, 4 months agoHey Charles, Its good to have you in the group. How do you feel about this narrowing of role? Do you think that if we still had more of a role in related fields that there would be more work currently available for landscape architects? If you want you could start a discussion about it. I think it would be interesting to see what we could learn…[Read more]

Landscapers Out of the Box 16 years, 4 months agoI’ve been working in this profession for 37 years and have found that as time goes by, landscape architect’s role gets more and more narrow. 30 years ago, I was doing natural resource analysis, coastal management programs and land use plans. Now to do much of anything with natural resources we have to hire biologists, geologists, soils engineers,…[Read more]

Landscapers Out of the Box 16 years, 7 months agoThere really is no boundary. The goal is to stimulate creativity. If the plastic plant roof has meaning and purpose beyond just looking unique then then i would want to hear about it. I think that what ever we do that is creative must be a mix of art with purpose. A lot of people end up posting cool pictures on Land8, but without explanation they…[Read more]

Landscapers Out of the Box 16 years, 7 months agoWhen in Landscape Architecture out of the Box? What defines the boundry. I can think of a roofscape-with plastic plants-that to me is cearly art not Landscape. Does just being unusual mean out of the box.

Design Implementation 16 years, 8 months agoAs someone who spent years as a contractor before going back to school, i can tell you that often the person you deal with in the office, or the supervisor, isn’t always going to be on site when the plan implementation starts. The few LARs that I worked with back home, made it a point to make sure that all plans were easy to read/understand, or in…[Read more]

Design Implementation 16 years, 8 months agoFor a Landscape Architect to truy be successful as a designer, he has to be able to communicate on the level of the contractor. Not to say that he designs to the level of the contractor, (which we all know contractors are alot like water, they always take the path of least resistance…) I say that coming from alot of years of being a contractor…[Read more]

“The greatest designer is normal people—the best cities in the world were not designed” – my frien i think we may include that in the design category. not in the academic kind, but in the category of the design made by specific needs of people, but is design.
