and p.s. of the trustees / executive committee – 13 of 63 are women, and that includes the executive secretary and CEO who are honorary members – 20%. read it and weep. Only 6 of the state chapter trustees are women. 6! sick.

Great thread Christopher – and very enlightening responses from ASLA….cold, self important, insular, disinterested, we’re doing just fine without you here in DC responses. I would have thought that ASLA would want as members every landscape architect in the country. Guess not.
It would be interesting to hear from people who are very active in…[Read more] -

Yep! There are ‘weekend warriors’ but if you work that way for a living you’re a ‘grunt’? Couldn’t agree more with the sentiments expressed here.
In line with something I’ve been thinking about – are we (as a profession) shooting ourselves in the foot by letting apprenticeship training for licensure fall by the wayside? I know some states still al…[Read more] -

I highly recommend a visit to any and all landscape architects – a must-see ranked right up there with the Vietnam Memorial in my opinion.

Back to the memorial of the ‘bad guy’…depends on your cultural perspective, doesn’t it?
Columbus Day is now Native American Day (at least here it is) as that day marked the beginning of the extermination of indiginous people.
The name of my town is a memorial to an individual exterminator of native people – lot of Lakota won’t even live in t…[Read more] -

HI Nick!
I’m with Paul – flash intro moving just a tick too fast. The flash graphics are also very light/transparent. They don’t come across very stong. I do like how the sketch geometry turns into the final graphic. It just doesn’t read strongly. Maybe a black background on the home page? That way the flash graphics would really pop.
The ‘about’…[Read more] -

I really appreciated this reminder Andrew. – “I know an ASLA national award winning landscape architect who started out as a receptionist back in the darker days of the 80’s in a surveyor’s office (had GSD MLA).” If we stay in the field we, in all likelyhood, have loooong careers ahead of us. Its hard to remember that when you just want to get…[Read more]

I’m certain you are all thinking of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo http://www.cmzoo.org/animalsPlants/plants/?s=5 which is not in WY, but in CO.
There has never been a zoo in Cheyenne, WY. Here is the link to the botanic gardens, though http://www.botanic.org/

I think you can do it. I would also recommend the Denver Botanic Gardens – they have some really nice high elevation plant palettes. Also High Country Gardens (catalogue).
Cheyenne is not high enough elevation to be relevant. They have a pretty nice botanic garden, though. I don’t think they have a zoo. OOh – I bet you’re thinking of the C…[Read more] -

There are no women-owned LA firms in my state. Mine will be the first when I get licensed later this year.

yeaaahh….there was NO call for presentations, just a bunch of local ASLA guys getting together and deciding what kind of presentations to have….there are no panelists or panel discussions as far as I can tell.
I’ve been talking to at least one member of the conference committee to be sure to include women speakers since the inception of the…[Read more] -

Yeah – I’ve seen that link. Last time I checked the last activity on it was in 2008 or 2007. I even emailed the moderator of the group and got no response…..oh – plus you have to be an ASLA member to be part of the group….see my comments above.

I think it absolutely is relevant. And what the dean of Harvard said is true of many women – since we are the only sex of our species able to procreate, we reach a point where we have to make a decision…..Catherine Brown apparently wrote on making the choice not to have children in favor of her career, reflecting the choice of many of her…[Read more]

Then you haven’t listened to the music very well – Anne Wilson is the singer, Nancy is the guitar player. If she doesn’t compare to the best the boys had to offer in the 70’s and 80’s then you’ve never listened to Heart. Rory Block is probably one of the best blues guitar players I’ve ever heard in my life. Ani DeFranco compares only to Prince i…[Read more]

If there was truly no discrimination in landscape architecture, you would see equal numbers of female ASLA fellows, equal numbers of women in ownership, partnership and managerial roles, equal numbers of women in professorships. Women have made up half of the landscape architecture graduates for some years now (ranging between 45%-55%). We should…[Read more]
