@Goustan and Andrew Garulay:
I lived in the P.I. for two years, so I know the jungle (climbed a perfect cone volcano! really cool.) The book you seek is Design with Nature, and limiting planting design to visual impact only is absolutely ridiculous.
So far we have strayed from thinking about the landscape, from the advanced thinking of the…[Read more] -

Your sense of humor should be helpful, but it seems to me that since it is in Laos, with serious environmental problems, this is an opportunity to jump OUT of the western landscape design box. I recommend Design with Nature, of course – why can’t each planting be a little ecological restoration? Are not their own forests good patterns to st…[Read more]

I agree with that – the whole EIS system is a complete joke, including the visual Impact analysis garbage and ‘mitigation measures.” CEQR needs to be tossed, it has no way to say no to development at all, only yes with ridiculous mitigations. Ca. loves to use these fred flintstone looking fake stone stuff if they are required to ‘mitigate’ so the…[Read more]

yes, it is only not a regulation because our society has become victims of big business and have been fooled into thinking that environmental regulations act against us.
but thank you, Mr. Garulay, I am heartened by your support of a common sense simple thing we are asking developers to aim for – not even requiring it, like code and building c…[Read more] -

If society doesn’t provide incentives to solve problems that we have collectively determined to be serious, then how do we progress? do we need the Building code, the Fire code – was the triangle shirtwaiste fire for naught, in your minds? And the trouble is, industry is ALWAYS making the money calculation, so the interests of the collective…[Read more]

@SS27 The 3% in science, ( if you understand the scientific method, which you should!) are NOT marginalized, they are welcomed with open arms, their data looked at and questioned ad infinitum. It is FOX news that does not allow the 97% to have their say, and the big money for the status quo is behind the global warming deniers – the oil…[Read more]

You are right that that is what Moore states, but you are wrong about global warming being non-existent. Aside from Al Gore (who cares about him?) 97% of the scientific community has measured and tested global warming for years.

I forgot to mention EROSION CONTROL. You are responsible that the landscape does not fall onto thehighway. I have no idea of wind, soil, or water conditions where you live, but EVEN Howard Roark would approve of a design based on EROSION CONTROL.

If I were you, I would follow the design process outlined in Design With Nature.
First, analyze your site as a SYSTEM – where is light and dark, slopes, soils, existing vegetation (none, probably, so then you should look at what lives naturally in this environment nearby), and the patterns of human use on the site (pretty easy – car traffic in…[Read more] -

Haha @Robert, all I said was BMP’s are written into law, through NEPA, I think, which is Federal. So it applies across the country as far as I know. Have you never had to design stormwater systems? I do work at the state scale, so perhaps if you do a lot of residential you don’t deal with stormwater so much, but BMP’s are still a really good…[Read more]

I don’t know what world Mr. Wainner is living in, but in my world sustainablililty is already written into law, and will only be growing. Best Management Practices in erosion control is a requirement. Dealing with drought conditions, rising flood waters, changing climate are all jobs you can get NOW, for places that have suffered horribly already,…[Read more]
