I would like to know, with the economy coming back and getting better what are the typical hours per week that you are working? Is it more or less than what it has been the last several years through the recession.
May 10, 2012 at 3:36 pm #157578Zach WatsonParticipantThat is one issue that I don’t remember coming across. I would try exporting/printing and to see if they appear in the final image. I’ll think about it thought and see if I can come up with an answer. It’s just a little more difficult to know what is happening without seeing all of the settings myself. Best of Luck!

May 3, 2012 at 6:18 pm #157650Zach WatsonParticipantAndrew,I appreciate the comment and the point is well taken. I have thought quite a bit about going into development because of my background in Landscape Architecture, because I would like to have the type of control over projects that I hear so many complain about. The reason I place my comments in the 3rd person at the moment is because I feel like I need to work for a Landscape Architecture firm for a while, now that I’m out of school, so I have a better real world understanding of Landscape Architecture rather than just an academic one.
May 3, 2012 at 4:54 am #157653Zach WatsonParticipantCoco your point is well taken, I have just completed my education, and have felt much the same way. I would like to see Landscape Architects take a more prominent role in the field of design. The issue that I believe we as a profession constantly hit the wall of profitability, our work generally is not something that can be sold or generate revenue in and of itself, and as we all know, money is what makes people make decisions on how to invest.
So what I personally would like to see is more Landscape Architects make a cross over to become developers. I have heard so many people talk about they are at the mercy of their client and how much money they are willing to spend on the outdoor environment. Well if a Landscape Architect was the one with the money and was making the investment, I personally would like to know if they would make the same decisions as their clients or would they invest the money in the ideas and concepts that they currently propose.
Simply put, take the bull by the horns.
May 1, 2012 at 7:29 pm #157660Zach WatsonParticipantSounds like great news to me, I’ll just be waiting for others to read the article and come here talking about how we are Landscape Architects not Landscape Designers, and how we are being misunderstood or disrespected. 😉
April 19, 2012 at 5:01 am #157835Zach WatsonParticipantInteresting article about the new generation not wanting to have to deal with cars, that goes along with the original topic.

April 10, 2012 at 3:36 pm #157968Zach WatsonParticipantGeorge, I feel like I have to apologize to a degree, there have been a number of comments I have read both here and other places about who the government needs to get their act together and work for ‘us’, meaning they should make it so ‘we’ can do our job. After reading some additional comments on this thread I don’t think your intention was to say that they government needs to give us work so our profession can survive. That idea is what I thought your original comment was making reference to. So I’m sorry for that.
I to believe that we need to stand up for ourselves, show people that we bring valuable tools to the table/discussion and that we shouldn’t be overlooked. Personally I think our profession lacks a sense of value because we have a difficult time quantifying what value our work brings to a project. Landscape Architecture melds both design and ecological science but our education system (at least in my experience) caters heavily to teaching design and falls short on teaching quantifiable science.
April 9, 2012 at 3:56 pm #157976Zach WatsonParticipantThat is not ASLA’s job nor it shouldn’t be. If we as a profession will loose more credibility if we are approaching the government and demanding that they provide us jobs. If we can not do our work to a level that is enticing for developers/builders to come to us with their project, and they believe that another profession can do our work better than we can then we don’t deserve to have a seat at the table. It is not ASLA’s or the Government’s fault if we don’t know how to market ourselves, that is a you problem and no amount of effort demanding a jobs is going to change that you problem.
April 5, 2012 at 5:16 am #158052Zach WatsonParticipantThere is only one of those things I can comment on. In regards to re-linking XREFs, you don’t have to re-link them if you set up the file system with relative paths. Here is a link to how to setup a relative path system.

April 4, 2012 at 2:03 am #173895Zach WatsonParticipantI believe it is a non issue. While it is sad to see EDAW transform into a division of AECOM, I don’t think EDAW was any more recognizable outside of the built environment industry then any other Landscape Architecture firm. Additionally there are many top firms that are beginning to either remove or simply not place the title of Landscape Architecture in the name of their firm, i.e. SWA Group, West 8, Olin, and many others.
The success of the profession is not about the name that is over the door but about the services that come out of the office.
March 13, 2012 at 7:52 pm #158396Zach WatsonParticipantGreat to see that other LA’s are starting to stand up and no longer happy with just being ‘The Good Wife’. The article mentions that some LA’s are starting to write credit clauses in their contracts. Is this something that anyone else has done, or do you just try to catch anything that you see and correct the misprint?
March 12, 2012 at 4:48 pm #158470Zach WatsonParticipantRoland, thanks for the find and the post!
March 10, 2012 at 3:08 pm #158485Zach WatsonParticipantThanks Jason that is very helpful and something that I didn’t know about. Honestly, I think you have just made my day!!
March 7, 2012 at 6:17 am #158508Zach WatsonParticipantThank you Tosh for that information I will look into the people/organization that you listed. I have been interested in West 8’s work for quite some time.
