In a climate reality defined by increasing extreme heat, longer exposure periods, and escalating UV risks, protecting public health, safety, and wellness is critical. But when utility lines, immature canopies, and other factors come into play, trees aren’t always the best way to create shade. In this Land8x8 Lightning Talk, Devin Christensen of USA SHADE explains how shade structures are a critical part of outdoor infrastructure.
According to Christensen, when shade structures are treated as amenities, they become the first items cut from budgets. When they are understood as infrastructure, they become as essential as drainage systems, lighting, and paving.
Trees, no matter how well selected and planted, require years to develop canopies large enough to provide meaningful shade. Shade structures deliver immediate protection. They reduce surface temperatures, provide UV shielding, and create measurable microclimatic improvements from day one.
Spaces that work for their users inspire more use and higher satisfaction. Protected outdoor environments encourage longer visits and frequent returns. For music venues and outdoor markets, shade structures enable activities that would otherwise be limited by heat exposure. For designers, seeing people actively using designed spaces is a true measure of success.
