Hi Claudia,
on one hand I expect intelligent technical solutions saving energy and ressources, minimizing waste etc. There are so many good technics available already. At least in Germany they get accepted quickly. On the other hand, as you say, the behavior of ourselves must change, solutions for housing and traffic are key issues. But we are only…[Read more] -

Well, simply put: I visited Germany in 1988, and even then, I observed people riding their bikes to the end of their street with the basket full of washed items to be sorted and recycled.
Recycling is just one small part of being sustainable, of course, but what I am suggesting is that the cultural attitude in western Europe is very different…[Read more]

Sorry, I haven’t read the whole thread here, but read enough to get the gist of the conversation…
There are several problems with the distinction between a landscape designer and a landscape architect.
1) There are many highly qualified people out there who are not licensed or even trained as landscape architects. I had a background in art and…[Read more]

Hi Robert, Thank you for the comment. I agree. My feeling is that the next phase of sustainability in the U.S. will move beyond sustainable sites into the realm of ‘behavior-based sustainability’. In other words, the sustainable design of places and objects is critical, but obviously without a fundamental change of values and behavior, even the…[Read more]

Hi Roland, I wanted to get back to you regarding the worm issue which is not typically interesting to most people – yet fascinating to us landscape architects for some reason. I agree that many people struggle to get beyond the basic ‘less than pretty’ realities of natural processes. It certainly is a sticking point in education – especially when…[Read more]

No, not at all. That’s what they want you to think. Some things are irrefutable. The glass is not half empty, its not half full, but it DOES have stuff in it.

Also print it as a postscript file and then use distiller to experiment on pdf sizes and quality.

UILA 16 years, 1 month agoI just got back from visiting the U of Idaho for the first time in 11 years. Lots of new (to me) stuff. I talked to Gary and Toru, but did not get back to see anyone else – lots of people to see outside of the U. Did see a few former employers (Frank Bennett and also Jon Decker) and some co-workers. …..and a lot of good friends in the region.

Yes, but on 80% pay plus 2 furlough days a month…so about 70% pay/hours. The good news is that I am retiring next month, so someone else can take my job.

My full prtfolio last spring was approx 60 pages in a 9MB pdf which printed relatively well and contained two animations. 12 pages over 10 megs is kind of ridiculous.
You only need 150 dpi for printing and as low as 72dpi for stuff that is only intended to view on screen. Your images should be raster and resized (or close to the final size…[Read more]

The problem with being a ‘realist’ is that reality is completely subjective, no?

Forces in the field now are striving and hell bent on making this field a “specialized niche” with sub-niches and nooks and crannies and their own little private pedestals. Thankfully they have not had success. Yet. Because I want to know if my garden is healing based, sustainable, energy focused, sensory, or if it is GLBT sensitive, HGTV…[Read more]

dear Roland,
the question is not about doing a better job than others. What we all need is doing a good job. It may start with the compost and bike lanes and does not end with sustainable sites. We do have to change the way of living on many levels. If you have a look in European books from 1920 or so and later, city planning, housing, ecology,…[Read more] -

Topos 16 years, 1 month agoHello Colm
it seems that money is a big issue when it comes to subscriptions. But as long as you get good value for your bucks or pounds it is a good inverstment. If Guinness is good for you, Topos is better 😉 -

96 dpi to 150 dpi is adequate for printing. You will want to get a file to BELOW 2 Mb if at all possible. Many firms still have a 2mb upload limit on portfolios when applying. You can save several versions.
If you assemble your portfolio in PowerPoint, it makes the whole downsampling thing easy since that program is optimized to view on a screen.…[Read more]

Here in the Mid-Atlantic, thanks to the gubmint and the Base Realignment, things aren’t hit as bad as many other regions, but business is still terrible. I’m not too sure with the questions as it regards to LA’s in particular (most of my contacts and colleagues are in commercial architecture and engineering), but since we are all part of the AEC…[Read more]
