Thanks for the information, like I said because spring semester doesn’t start for another week and a half I don’t have a good reference as to how effective ASU’s chapter is, but I want to get involved this semester, because I didn’t hear anything about it fall semester. What I have heard from the students involved with the AIAS chapter here, they…[Read more]

Hi Zach – are you curious about how local ASLA chapters work with University chapters, or how university chapters function? I noticed also that you are in Arizona – are you going to ASU?
I just graduated last year from the University of Arizona, and can comment some on our ASLA situation. I felt like ASLA involvement at my university was pretty…[Read more]

Design Implementation 16 years, 3 months agoI also went to design Build after graduation. I feel that if you understand the installation from the hands on construction aspect, it will make you a better designer and allow you to push boundries because you really understand them.
Contractors can be allies or enemies and it will affect the project on some level. I have found that working in…[Read more]

Did you see the LA Times article about this? They had the UC Riverside Plant science and Botany department head as a consultant. I tried posting a link but it crashed my browser. Been having some problems with this site. Maybe its time to upgrade to IE7.

Yeah, I had my struggles with that section and passed it on the 3rd try. Some of the comments you get back on redlines can be infuriating. If you don’t do grading regularly, it will be tough to get it done in the given time period. I felt that they should offer more time as there were occasions when I realized I was heading in the wrong direction…[Read more]

Was that the Northeast Philly airport James? That’s where I took a couple of the multi-choice sections. That Prometric company seems to specialize in the pilot’s licensing stuff. I don’t remember noise being an issue. Maybe the building was well insulated.

jamie,
Good question! I haven’t even heard from the board if my application has been processed so i can sit for the state section.
The only study material I gathered was from their recommended list. It was a list of books and web site articles that has filled a 3″ 3 ring binder and has put me to sleep many a night! I purchased around 4 books on…[Read more]

To my knowledge things here in Phoenix haven’t picked up enough to bring on more staff. Most places are barely squeaking by and are choosing to bring on any new employees on a contract basis only. I know of many offices that are down to the principals/ directors and even they wonder how things will turn out. Projects are coming in but not as fast…[Read more]

Zach our student chapter at UNLV was and still is very involved with the local Southern Nevada ASLA Chapter. Many of us established great relationships with our future coleagues and bosses and I believe that it helped in finding a job with the right firm. The chapter meetings continue to be a great place to meet and discuss projects and what’s g…[Read more]

I went and talked to a firm here in the Phoenix area and one of the two owners said he was not ready to hire yet but things here were also looking better.

I have recently wrestled with a cohesive definition, having just published “The Fundamentals of Landscape Architecture”.
I began with a quote from Kathryn Gustafson – “If there’s sky, it’s mine”. I love that quote! For me, that defines it. Here is the first paragraph of my introduction for those who aren’t satisfied with a simple 5 word…[Read more]

This could be a good opportunity to learn a bit about construction as well. Taking some time to talk to the contractors could pay off as I might have to do some design build for awhile considering the job market.

Thanks Brent, I really like your idea of working with community groups. My thesis work is primarily a study in implementation. I’m working with a small beach side resort town to revise all of their mechanisms that deal with the forest: codes/ordinances, management plan, budgeting etc… It’s all about what a municipality can do to effect change…[Read more]

Florida to me is all about invasive species (animals). How about something with the symbiosis between urban forests and the species that survive in them (animals) (or Don’t survive in them.)
Urban forests and the abiltily to support endangered plant species. Urban forests and projected changes through rising water tables (? just geussing).…[Read more]

How about an in depth critique of a built landscape? This was something that was required in our senior studio when I was in school. I found it to be a much more eye opening project than expected. I guess I am wondering more about your final project – what components of sustainable urban forestry are you studying? Tree selection, installation, maintenance, and survival? Community involvement and organizing? Effects of an urban forest on sustainability such as stormwater management, urban heat island, etc.?
Depending on your topic, I could…[Read more]
