I did speak to two LAs localy that both use AutoCad for all there work and they both use only 2D. From our conversation I feel prety good about my purchase. I will have to create…[Read more]

Hi Larissa – contacting UC Berkeley’s department might be a great place to inquire about organizations in the Bay Area that advocate or work on issues relevant to landscape architecture. They have a great tradition of working with communities in a range of capacities, and a lot of ties to environmentally-based nonprofits in the area.
I feel like…[Read more]

May I suggest that you look at the official definition of the profession by IFLA approved in 2003? That gives you a generalized idea of the recognized description of our profession for the International Labour Office – Geneva.
This is how it sums up:
“Landscape Architects conduct research and advise on planning, design and stewardship of the…[Read more] -

Are you in SoCal now? Sounds like it from that list.
Majestic Beauty Hawthorns are good for a smaller tree that drops very little material. Italian Cypress is also good by the standard of dropping debris.
Med fan Palms are often used in Las Vegas around pools. Why don’t you like them? -

Hi Bianca,
What about Sunbrella. http://www.sunbrella.com/
I find the best way to go is to buy the material and have them custom made. In this way, they come out exactly the way you designed them. The Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles has a lot of fabric showrooms. http://www.pacificdesigncenter.com Also there is the Laguna Design Center in Orange…[Read more] -

It seems that I have had the benefit of more thoughtful clients than yours.
I have worked all over the country…I wonder if there is something particularly anti-tree in Southern CA? -

Thanks for that info, Kevin. I fixed that bit. Sorry about that.
Nick-I just found this forum, and I’m glad to find that it exists. As a landscape student, I’m always looking for that perspective. I’m glad to see some people have taken the survey.

I have had the identical experience with institutions, shopping centers, residential..No-one ever tries to save the trees..And small flocks of birds, here in CA. hummingbirds, are suddenly cast adrift in a barren landscape, for no reason – there is a huge predjudice against eucalyptus in this state, no matter how big, people in califiornia want to…[Read more]

Landscape Architecture has the ability to stir the emotions and spirts of man by unlocking the ‘soul’ of a place through the dispersal of information on it’s culture, history, geology, and a variety of other systems uniquely inherent to that place.

I saw your post over at Archinect as well. I’m glad you posted here for the LA perspective. It sounds like an interesting research project, especially considering recent events.

I agree in our area (Zone 6b) the only trees planted even remotely close to a pooi are Emerald Arbs. An they are planted for privacy… not shade. If shade is need plant some oaks of the white oak family far enough away from the pool that they will cast the appropriate shadows on the pool area in the desired time frame (say afternoon shade) I use…[Read more]

I can’t speak about homeowners, my experience is with institutions and bigger projects.
I have seen projects re-designed to “save trees” and yet not sufficiently to actually spare the tree. So in the end (a few years) the tree is dead and the design is not what it ought to have been.
My point is not (perhaps you misunderstood me?) that the trees…[Read more] -

Mr. Halpern, I haven’t noticed that homeowners in the US were in the habit of ‘saving’ trees. Where is that a problem, in your experience? In thirty years of LA, I have not noticed that the LA’sget to ‘save’ the trees, later to be taken out by the sensible horitculturality..It is ALWAYS the opposite – the aborist is called on site, and oh so sadly…[Read more]

We use LandCad from Eaglepoint Software and we are currently using BricsCad ( a AutoCad lookalike ) Though Eaglepoint currently supports version 7 of BricsCad there are several newer versions of BricsCad all which will NOT work with Eaglepoint.
