About irrigation firstly you have to tell us about the angle of the roof. Is it flat or slopy?if its sloopy use parallel dripper lines through the ground. use a Q16cm small valve before each dripper line so you can controll the water..if water is much be sure that it falls..

This discussion is far off topic and will now close. You can continue the discussion on Mike Lin here – http://www.land8lounge.com/forum/topics/mike-lin – however, I’d like to encourage you to talk about ideas rather than people.

I’m not trying elevate this conversation into potential argument. However, just because on paper you are RETIRED, as you highlighted, doesn’t mean you did so under your own free will. The fact is I really don’t know for sure . In my opinion his class acts as a catalyst to push art products on people who are insecure about their graphic ability.…[Read more]

I too feel annoyed by people who hand out the advice, but mostly because it’s very impersonal…for example: “this will pass,” or my favorite, “This can’t last forever,” or the well meant, “Best of luck!” And yes, this is worse than the previous recession periods we’ve had in the past, but recession is recession, and it doesn’t mean that others…[Read more]

that firms are able to dictate an unlivable wage and / or inhumanely long hours with inadequate compensation suggests that there must be too much supply of young designers coming up with comparable skills to those already working. If conditions are bad enough over the long run, young designers will leave the profession and do something for better…[Read more]

Nick,
I just visited your web site. You younger folks scare the crap out of me! Nice graphics, nice site.
I’m old as dirt now, never could draw quite that well, have a cheap, Go-Daddy templated on-line portfolio for a web site and never learned CADD. If I had to find a job right now, competing against younger talent such as yours, I’d be on the…[Read more] -

I agree with a lot of what Valkenburg said in that article. This is definetely a time to explore other interests, to be resourceful, etc, etc. But, I’m sorry, I just can’t help but feel somewhat annoyed by people handing out advice who are not out there right now trying to find a position (I’m speaking of Valkenburg). There were some very…[Read more]

You can’t claim to be out of a recession when the unemployment rate is still close to 10%. We were at 5% last year. When we see the rate going down, then Bernanke can celebrate.
What to do in the meantime? Get LEED certified and become a LEED consultant. Thats not going away any time soon. I had an idea on the back burner to approach home…[Read more]

Im with you Jessi. I read the MVVA article a while back. It is comforting to know that such an accomplished person came from a relatively modest upstart and the he an probably others like him, understand the realities we’re all facing.
Thanks for the attachment and I hope you hang in there. I wish I knew how to weld.

Economists couldn’t see the recession starting, so why should things be any different for the recovery. For now, I’ve had to put my resume and portfolio packages away and buckle down with a sales and fabrication job at a welding shop so I can pay for the lovely 6 years of education I’m not currently using. I guess being flexible and able to keep…[Read more]

I agree Chris, though I have no experience to back it up, that an established firm is more likely to view experience as a sol prop/design builder as very relevant and admirable experience, certainly over doing something unrelated or less connected with actual design and construction of outdoor spaces. I also see Andrews point.
One major…[Read more]

You have prior experience running such a business, which is a huge plus. You have gained additional skills and knowledge, which is another plus and in some ways gives you a leg up over contractors and some of the other design-build guys. I would ask what have you got to lose? To me, gaining relevant experience is better than doing nothing or doing…[Read more]

If you are a more experienced with 3D modeling on the computer, I would suggest trying out 3DS Max. It currently has a free 6 month license, you can find this here (http://www.students.autodesk.com) you can create a username for free and it also has many other programs for free. 3DS Max will also have tutorials available within the program (you can also…[Read more]

Again – I replied to Morroccan discussion – look at sicilian cooking and influences. Sicily was inhabited by folk from all over the med and this influence is retained in sicilian cooking. Look at the food – see all the herbs and spices they use in moroccan cooking and what the verieties are. Consider aspect and elevation if in the mountains but dinner and its flavourings are what is grown and always roses – check damascus varieties i think – old ones anyway. Dont forget rosewater is also used in cooking.

I think if you search the forum this subject was well covered. (No pun intended,) However, if you search the bay area and central London in satellite mode on google am sure you will see a number. For London, search around West End between say Harrods and Bloomsbury neighbourhood around Brtish Museum. All those names are searchable – go west from…[Read more]

I think the practice act in co excludes single family residences.
One thought I had regarding licensing is that if in a year or even two from now I decide I need to get that license I could transition the business in to strictly residential design (moonlighting) and/or have a number of people take it over in the interim.
I would think that if I…[Read more]

I agree for the most part, particuarly with the part on internships and cheap labor.
