Here’s one – how about ‘
street closings, their conceptual origins, (the ‘commons””, Jane Jacobs, Wlm Whyte..), their proliferation, evolution, and subsequent devolution..
Charlottesville’s Maine Street is a good example..San Antionio Riverwalk. Current – Broadway – (Manhattan..) Go there and do interviews..even the High line..What part of the…[Read more] -

Hey Robert,
Not sure if you’ve seen this before, but William Whyte’s “Social Life of Small Urban Spaces” might be a great place to start. I used this as a basis to do a study of college campus places and spaces, which turned out to be a really fun project. I ended up writing a 40 page paper kind of by accident as I went through it, because it…[Read more] -

nca replied to the topic what is your design style? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 16 years, 7 months ago
It sort of feels awkward to say I work in a particular ‘style’.
I’d say there’s a Colorado Front Range vernacular, as well as styles more specific to each region of the state, associated culture, and context.
I’ve worked a lot in the ‘naturalistic’ style with single family homes and larger public sites alike. I can see the slight variations in…[Read more]

true, Andrew, functionality does not define style, completely, – it is still most important for me, in considering whether a design is good or not.
Lets see – the style to my highway landscapes..hee hee..definitely not decorative – I go for complete seventies xeriscape, with early seventies concrete modern detailing..
hows that?
but I do like to…[Read more] -

COMPETITIONS – ongoing 16 years, 7 months agoBefore you embark on any competition I advise you to check the political context. Bevare of any competition that has politicians as judges. Anglo – saxon countries have tendency to compromise the results and often completely change the outcome.
One such competition just happened In Sydney (Darling Harbour East) where due to unacceptable meddling…[Read more] -

Paul,
Thanks for getting into some of the nitty gritty involving lawsuits. I will remember your words of wisdom regarding time/cost of being one of the ‘named’ in a lawsuit. Very good to know that you have had a positive experience with Leatzow when it counted the most.

I’ll pass along that I’ve been with Leatzow for maybe 15 years now and I’ve found them responsive by US mail, phone and email, and having been through two lawsuits with them, I have to say they’ve been great. I’ve been in business for over 30 years in California, so two suits is probably not bad, though at the time any lawsuit is horrible.…[Read more]

Sure. Tell me a little more about your unique selling proposition that differentiates you from your competitors? Who is your target client? Why do your clients purchase your services? You get the idea. You cannot start an effective gorilla marketing campaign until the service that you offer and your ‘ideal’ client is understood completely.
