Hi,
I generally will convert my pdfs to jpg and insert as a raster image. This does not allow you to have transparency, but it is still there for you too work over. I don’t have any problems with distortion doing it this way.
hope this helps.Julie

I like functional first – I like the garden/park to function, to be based on circulation. I dislike ornamental plantings. I think color and texture in a garden can usually be almost completely ignored – they change with the seasons..I dislike gardens that think too much about plant color and texture..And I like the late 19th century garden…[Read more]

I tried importing a pdf that i had converted into tif yesterday… the file started as a 1mb file and after beingconverted to the tif was 20mb. It looked fantastic in quality but caused issues with memory I thing and was not managable. When I go to insert an image into a drawing it will not even recognize a jpg. only bmp and tif.

I don’t know how “highly effective” it is yet, but the social networking trend seems to be one avenue that a lot of people are turning to. Facebook in particular. It basically can serve as your website for your business, but it has the viral capacity built into it that can cause a snowball effect in terms of page views/interactions. I made a…[Read more]

The recession ends when you and I start making more than we did last year. Just that simple.
Sherman makes a good point. Times are ripe for new firms to start up. You have to look for work where others are not looking. Look to small developers, builders, contractors, etc. for a starter project or two. Nothing wrong with following the “for sale”…[Read more]

So what are some educated guesses for a rough timeline of a turnaround?
For those that have lived through previous recessions, how do the mechanics work, what are the earmarks of recovery?

And look at where a lot of those people who lived through the first great depression ended up, many very successful and even well off later in life. I think there’s something to be said for being resilient in these tough times and doing all you can to learn how to live a more modest lifestyle, but I feel ya Jim.
I’m planning on coaching skiing…[Read more]

hi,
for me,im prefer combination of modern and formal style of designing..it is because, in my country the profession of LA is still in development because it quite new.so people still don’t see the relevant in having the LA in their environment. any projects, architect comes first and it become a challenge to LA. so,the mentality of the public…[Read more] -

I am still an entry level (graduated last year), so it takes sometime to be able to contribute more significant way. University of Washington 16 years, 7 months agoHi Noriko,
You are quite a firestarter, just look at this discussion you provoked?
So I think you are far more capable of much bigger things than just taking notes and pictures in Chicago. What do you dream about? What keeps you up at night? Why did you really become a Landscape Architect? TELL US!

You might also call a couple of the local school districts. I know many of the ones around here have specific guidelines for minimum or preferred site area, as well as some standard prototypical footprints. You might even be able to get them to send you a CAD drawing.

Thanks! As an FYI, some .bmps and .tifs allow you the same layer/color/screening potential in CAD. As I mentioned above, it’s more a function of image type than format. But it’s definitely good to have a simplified standard like that, as it makes file management, work sharing, and troubleshooting so much easier.

A couple of the other comments have made me remember one other thing that can cause distortion, particularly in bitmapped images. There’s a setting I only know how to access through Photoshop that lets you see the Pixel Aspect Ratio. 9 times out of 10, it’s set to square and everything displays right. Once in a while I’ll find a file that either…[Read more]

That depends on a few things, most notably if you’re scaling the image up at all and what type of image it is. With no scaling and on a color or grayscale .jpg, with a plotter that can do max 300 dpi, you’re probably right. With a line drawing scaled even just 2x, you will. I use 300 dpi for scanning bitmapped line drawings; higher if I’m going to…[Read more]
