The transparency issue is a function of the image type. Black and white bitmapped images have only two possible colors, and ACAD tends to automatically interpret white as ‘should be transparent’. I believe there’s also a setting in the attachment/image options to turn this on and off, or to specify a color for transparency. With grayscale images,…[Read more]

So much information – thank you! I’m trying to go through it while still doing all the things I need to do today.
What image editing software do youguys recomend? I use a few free online services… It seems to be hit and miss as some will fail during the conversion.

University of Washington 16 years, 7 months agoWell, thanks to the downturn, I have enough free time to go to Chicago for ASLA Conference. I hope I can meet with you at Alumni Reunion on Friday at 8 PM. Your comments are inspiring. When this dark recession started to fully manifest, it made me think “why our universities keep producing many landscape architects while the profession is so…[Read more]

Ben, I wish I could be that hopeful. Some say as long as another 18 months to 2 years. It seems as though we LAs in private practice are weathering the storm much better than the employee types. I know of several large firms that have closed their offices here in the southeast and have layed off the entire staff. This is why I respond to the kids…[Read more]

I think Chris Whitted has done a great job providing some tips as well as asking some great questions. Addressing some of his questions may allow us to offer better insight.
As to the use of raster images in CAD, we only use two graphic formats, PCX and JPG.
– For reference / trace purposes, we scan items as a B&W PCX file. It is jaggy like a…[Read more]

Bernanke is trying to spin…all I’m seeing in the financial news is that the banking problems are JUST HITTING the commercial banks. Record defaults and foreclosures on commercial properties, and the banks are not lending for projects. There is also plenty of retail and office space built and available (at least in this region), much of it new.…[Read more]

On that note, most people aren’t going to notice a difference between a 150 and 300 dpi image, let alone 600. I don’t think I would.

A few thoughts/suggestions: When doing trace/reference work from sketches where I want a high level of detail, I tend to use the .tif rather than .bmp format. .tif offers the option of compression schemes that CAD can usually also read. if I’m going to be plotting something I’ll create a .jpg at the specific output size/resolution of my final…[Read more]

Is the attached image another cad drawing youre tracing over? It’s difficult to see what you’re talking about in that attachment. Why not just insert a jpeg? Can you get a hold of the original cad drawing and insert as xref? If yo dont necessarily need a bmp, try a jpeg and check the resolution and size before inserting. You shouldn’t need…[Read more]

GO on a Saturday if you can they only run the fountains on that day or Sunday. It was well worth the train ride form Paris, the gardens are very well maintained. Also if you need a guide book, go to AAA and get one they are the most thorough and will tell you where to go.
