Hi Charles,
I have an Intuos 3 tablet and I never use a mouse again. Working with a tablet takes some getting used too but it pays of in the end. It definatly solves the tendonitis issues (I am guessing you mean the carpal tunnel syndrome (arm and wrist pain)).
With a little practise you can even use the tablet for autocad, sketchup and…[Read more] -

Whilst it doesn’t pay the rent, we are focusing our efforts on sorting out our systems and sharpening our output quality, preparing for the inevitable uptick, and all those things we never get to do the rest of the time whilst we are so gunnel under. We have enough work to keep us going (just – and for the time being), but we are diversifying our…[Read more]

Thanks, Les, interesting comments – we do not want any crack willow, although I seem to remember it did release Frodo and Sam, for some reason..Have to look that up!
(thank you for not referring to ‘whomping willow’ in harry potter – ) … are there any willows in Sword and the Stone? Reading that now..And, Of course, the wind and the…[Read more] -

Ask local rangers where you can buy sticks to plant or whole trees. Use stock as local as possible. If near the sea this may even be a little salt tolerant. Depending on how much bank you want to cover you can add say 9% foreigners. You could, for example, plant Britsh osier and pussy willow in with that 9% with a view to cutting back the pussy…[Read more]

I will be pleased to accept a brief and design something. However, most hotels have to cut according to their cloth in the space they have. Later refurbishments will naturally be edgier though, as always, some goofoff boss always wants to cut corners and save cash. Respectfully, therefore, I would suggest you look at several hotels in London,…[Read more]

The cure for Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or tendonitis is stopping doing it! However, some rest, attempts at being ambidextrous and having a friend to massage hand, etc. all help. In addition some relief may come from using Rhus. Tox. cream available from health food shops and the like. Look it up first and always tell your doc, if you are…[Read more]

Basic Tips… there are so many I will either post a blog or start a discussion on this if anyone wants it. My first poit would be to understand layers in Photoshop, and the multiply layer styles they will help out the most if you are adding alot of color to a work. If you have a black line drawing only, no textures or colors, export the image as…[Read more]

Just tried out the Wacom Intuos III today for the first time. I have to admit that I found it a little counter intuitive which surprised me. I’m sure it’s something that grows on you as you learn to work with it. I’m trying to take a sketchup model into Photoshop, are there any basic tips for a beginner looking to learn quickly?

Chris Overdorf replied to the topic AutoCAD Cert. before applying to MLA programs? in the forum EDUCATION 16 years, 7 months ago
No. It’s a waste of time to focus on on any one technology while in school. Use your MLA program to focus on design theory, critical analysis, creative thinking and writing/presentation skills. If your heart is in landscape architecture for the right reasons, knowledge of the technical tools will become apparent later. AutoCAD is but a very small…[Read more]

Try the US Forest Services “Biogeoengineering” Technical Reference Guide. It should be available online on their publications page.

I would wait and take CAD classes when you get to school. I graduated an MLA program without taking CAD and ended up taking a summer course and a course at community college.

Thanks for everyone’s help on this!
What word is used to describe us as Landscape Architects? Or, even better, someone who excels and is talented in Landscape Architecture?
For example, epicure = A person with refined taste, especially in food and wine. Is there a similar term for Landscape Architects/Designers?

An earlier post displayed a standard misspelling for genius loci – it’s the ‘intelligence’ of the place, hence ‘genius’, rather than the taxonomical ‘genus’.
This is where Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown got his name – speaking of the ‘capabilities’ of the place. ‘Sense of place’ is more or less the same thing, but such a hackneyed phrase that it is…[Read more]
