  • Any tips for a tablet newbie?

  • I have started doing more expert witness and highest best use studies for attorney’s. It might not get built but it keeps the design skills active. If you like to indure stress and pressure it is a fun approach to design.

I feel like I’ve seen a lot more conservativism in architects than LA’s. Doesn’t stop me from wanting to learn how to design buildings, lol. Perhaps it’s the hubris you’re sensing, getting mistaken for unbridled creativity.

The BSLA program I was in actually didn’t focus as much on horticulture as much as I expected. Though we did recieve healthy…[Read more]

  • Great details, thanks so much… All that geology and engineering and soils sounds quite practical. I like the idea of the program having a little faith in the student’s freedom to design. I wonder if that is characteristic of all MLA programs….Being knighted for landscape design is pretty badass.

  • A tabelet is not going to replace your mouse… it is nearly impossible to use a tablet with Sketchup and Autocad because you dont hava middle button for panning, scrolling, rotation, and menu selection, you could program the side buttons on some of the newer models, but this still would be awkward. If you are going to get one for Photshop or…[Read more]

  • You’re right. It’s the political correctness that I worry about. In a lot of cases environmentalism is seen only as a cool fad or a matter of ethics. Fads go away when something else becomes cool, and ethics are regularly ignored. That’s exactly why we need to concentrate on practicality when we present green building options to clients.…[Read more]

  • As the Chapter is hosting the Fremont Park Design Competition, I thought you all might be interested in some of the artwork created for the Chalk It Up event held at the park over Labor Day weekend.

I work for state DOT, and we have had to move people to other departments, stormwater or construction, due to cutbacks on projects…sorry, no info on private organizations..and we are all happy to still have our jobs, even with mandatory furloughs!

  • I think my particular Master’s degree was more practical than I realized at the time…We had two years of engineering, just doing the designs with the learning coming with getting the work done, a year of soils, a year of geology, as well as putting together specs, as part of engineering..It was all done through design work, though, which I think…[Read more]

  • Thanks Nick, Sherman

  • Thanks for the Master’s perspective, Trace. Did you find that the program, although “dream” oriented, was still a practical course of study? Could you describe what you mean by “mental freedom”?

Anyone else with a Master’s out there, I’d love to hear your story too.

  • I’m right-handed but use my left hand for months at a time – I find the ability to use both hands helps a lot and computer work does not take a whole lot of dexterity…

  • I’m thinking about switching over to the wacom as well for sketchup and photoshop work. How tough is it to use while doing 3d models?

  • I had the same issue come up with a mouse – switching to a trackball solved my problems. It allowed me to put my arm in a stationary position, and after seven years of trackball use, I don’t have any further issues with my arm.

I also use a Wacom tablet (I’m mostly 3dsmax, with a smattering of Autocad) – I’d have difficulty using the tablet as my…[Read more]

  • Thanks, Nick! I found some stuff from a streambank reveg. federal site..still looking though – we used it really successfully on a stream in Virginia, and I just can’t remember the exact detail…plus interested in application for California ….

(I do always feel bad when I see absolutely NO-ONE responds to a post, but I geuss we should not…[Read more]

The last small office I worked at hired a dedicated business development person. We also took on some smallish residential projects to offset overhead. I’m now trying to do my own consulting work as a design and graphics production resource with the capability of working remotely as a subcontractor, potentially reducing overhead for established…[Read more]

Not very well in my experience. I prefer to use a mouse with sketchup and autocad. A former coworker used a trackball for everything. The other advantage of using a trackball is that no one will use your machine when youre out of office.

I’d suggest using a tablet for just about anything else though, so long as you can move your shoulder, elbow…[Read more]

I gotta disagree that a lot of us are “design-build.” I think most students, whether bsla, bla, or mla tend toward dream design and have no sense of how things go together. I’m also not sure why so many practitioners and academics balk at the idea of design-build as a legitimate and worthy sphere of practice. In my opinion, we could use a lot more…[Read more]
