That was one of my first intuitions : was thinking of laying bundles of bamboo strips and having the surface above. Good for the roots as long as it lasts.
Problem is : what happens once the ‘mulch’ disappears ? Surface lands on roots, maybe cracks opened…
Sound like we fall back to the ‘stilts’ structure solution. -

Good point about the guard rail : hadnt thought about that.
At first I didn’t think about the pavers option. Then, it has been suggested to me here :

and the more i think about it, the more I like it, though the process is still not entirely clear to…[Read more] -

If they do, I will go Greenpeace style and chain myself to the tree trunk.

Would it be possible to put down a thick layer of a mulch like coarse wood chips or perhaps even rubber chips to prevent further compaction around the tree? These materials would cushion and distrubute any loads on the, as well as spring back. With the wood chips, it might possible to also put a geotextile over the wood chips and then recover with…[Read more]

please say that a chainsaw is NOT one of the options they are considering.

Beautiful tree–in this case the owner should adapt the facility to accommodate this singular tree instead of the other way around. But we all know how this goes. One issue with a raised deck for vehicles would be the potential for drivers to go over the edge so a fairly stout guardrail is required. I would consider using permeable pavers for the…[Read more]

Yeah, thanks. It was the City plan check that required it in the first place… Local ordinance is stricter that state model.

still 2 weeks before presentation, keep suggestions coming !
Ernst, it is the solution I am thinking about now : some structure will also help decompact and improve soil where we ‘elevate’ the pathways. Beneficial to the tree overall.
Toby, very good point, hadnt thought about the weight yet.
thank you both :champagne: !
This tree is actually…[Read more]

§ 492.7 Irrigation Design Plan “…(A) Dedicated landscape water meters are highly recommended on landscape areas smaller than 5,000…”
The word ‘recommended’ is not absolute.
Smart controllers (B) and flow sensors (G) are required.
I’d skip the meter in your specs. At worst the city will tell you to include, but you can argue over the def…[Read more] -

not wood. some idiot in too heavy a vehicle will drive on it and break it. and wood rots.
use steel. steel sheeting (~2.5m sq x 25mm) on steel posts in concrete column at each corner.no matter what, I hope they have lots of money to fix this problem.

I understand your point, but fail to see how it applies.
All tools have limitations.
Claiming the iPad is “useless for note taking or accurate sketching as the stylii tend to be as blunt and broad as a finger tip.” is an inaccurate generalization. This was my point.Off the point…really like the home page image on your website.

The only feasable solution in such a confined situations seams to me to put a new drive way on stilts.
The surrounding planter beds are already slightly higher.
Bu placing the foundations and colums you might disturbe a few more roots, but what is this to having to loose such a beauty in due time. -

You should research living expenses of both cities. Would you rather live like a king in Shanghai or a starving artist in Sydney? No point living in the better city if you can’t afford to enjoy its amenities. And Shanghai is pretty up there in terms of culture and things to do. It’s not that bad.
And don’t think you will stay in one firm and one…[Read more]

Sure i could probably use a butter knife to turn a screw, but i’d rather use a screwdriver. See my point?

Samsung note 10.1 is what i use. We also have an ipad. The not is head and shoulders above the ipad in terms of funtionality. It comes with a pressure sensitive stylus but i also bought a wacom bamboo stylus for sketching. I use the tab for quick ideas and some sketching, not taking, markups, etc.
Id highly recommend a tab similar to the note…[Read more] -

Toby – I totally agree with your comments. This was for Santa Rosa, CA – I believe the Sub-Meter is a way of not requiring a separate City Meter for Irrigation. California’s Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance AB 1881 only recommends (§ 492.7) dedicated meters for landscapes smaller than 5,000 square feet – so this must be the city’…[Read more]
