The New York project is just a dream, a newspaper article, no more, in response to Hurricane Sandy – that is all I know.
The Berkeley professor, I would not like to use the name, if you don’t mind.
both answers characterize our responses to natural disasters, actually – they amount to nothing or…[Read more] -

One of the professors at Berkeley charged in in the face of governmental incompetence, and mapped the new shoreline and floodplains, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Our part is also to advocate for environmental solutions, and to design them responsiblly when we can- can you imagine all the edges of New York’s outer boroughs transformed into b…[Read more] -

You can obtain huge perks, if you can develop into an efficient landscape architect. I think that the field of LA has huge earning potential, so if you are capable enough, you can easily get massive perks into your account in no time.

As a landscape architecture, you should think of ways in which you can make the overall structure that keeps damages to minimal. It is not possible to accurately predict natural disasters, and prevent them well in advance. But, you can create a landscape architectural structure that can withstand natural disasters to the best, and makes…[Read more]

It seems to me, Andrew, you are taking ‘structure’ literally, as buildings perhaps, with the three dimensionality the most important thing?
and I stand by it – outdoor rooms are just another type of path.
perhaps it is ‘ego-centric’ as you say, but it seems a futile gesture to not have a design be for something – I can’t wrap my head around t…[Read more] -

We design alterations to the land whether it is new development or re-development. Hopefully, we all analyze the site and the goals of every project to avoid problems in the future.
We should not have to change how we go about our business. However, the sites may be dictating what we should or should not propose for activities in certain areas…[Read more] -

The question is not what the basis of design is. It is about building structure. What you are saying neither agrees with or disagrees with anything anyone else has written.
How do you build structure to support your paths?
Philosophically, a path is a strong structural element, but on the ground it may just as easily be overwhelmed by ot…[Read more] -

Just to chime in, in looking at developing order in the landscape (or architecture), you have to be clear as to your intent and how you construct the site. Ultimately I believe all design in an imposition on the site so we have to be clear as to what we are trying to do and why. Another way to put it is to determine your reaction to the c…[Read more]

Wow! Reading all your perspectives on creating structure in the landscape is fabulous. My challenge is always finding the right words to explain it to a student or homeowner. When I finally gain their understanding, it’s fun to see the ah-ha moment. I have to admit, Trace, I’m intrigued with your path philosophy. I often organize the spac…[Read more]

Two things occured to me when reading the article:
1). The house is what’s really historically important. The landscape has probably changed a bit with each new homeowner. It’s not as though lawn is a rare plant with historical significance.
2). In my opinion a landscape that uses natives or even just drought tolerant plants is celebraing the r…[Read more] -

that article makes my neck hurt. As far as I am concerned, ecology takes precedence over history, always.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21899227
that is where we should be using our brains. Yes, history is very important, but to talk about historical sod, in drought starved texas, is like talking about not raising taxes on t he…[Read more] -

Disagree with all of above comments.
The basis of all landscape design is the path. Determine where the paths go, where the journey of the landscape goes, from where to where, (even if it is onlly an ornamental planting bed – there is a visual path), and go from there. All else is decoration on top of the path * structure*. From that you get ma…[Read more] - Load More
