“Anyone know what the job market is like for an MLA grad?”
http://land8lounge.com/forum/topics/anyone-know-what-the-job-market…
This trend has already been discussed on Land8 (link above) and once a month someone ask about school comparisons. I suggest you read it from start to finish. It also depends on where you prefer to work: public or…[Read more]

Brian, it depends on your bachelors degree. 2 years for MLA if you had a BLA/BSLA or 3 years if some other type of degree. And many schools vary on this requirement.
Bottom line is why a MLA? Isn’t anyone paying attention to the economy and which professions are ALWAYS hit the hardest during recessions? People are just so stubborn and don’t make…[Read more] -

I have read it thanks, I’m still keeping an open mind about pursuing that career path, as I consider other areas.

Yeah, its “Mall Art”. Its kitsch. But I think understanding the appeal of this kind of art is worth studying. Does the viewer like to imagine themselves in such a landscape? In a little cottage with a thatched roof? He did observe rules of composition that work for designed landscapes as well. A lot of New Urbanism work gets the same kind o…[Read more]

I really was looking at the idea of emotional content in designed and built landscapes and gardens. Kinkade’s work draws emotional responses…perhaps he aimed to achieve an emotional content in his work.
For me the issue was not whether his work was good or not. Rather how does a landscape architect design and build to get emotional inv…[Read more] -

He gave some people something they liked. That is a good thing. I don’t like it, but it is a great thing that he brought joy to those that did. It does not mean that every painter should paint this way.
It is the same with real landscapes. Enjoy the parts of the diversity that you like and get over the things that you don’t like, but be glad…[Read more] -

I forgot to mention there’s a google earth app, as well.

I do have a stylus, but I use it for drawing, not writing. I’d rather just type, if I need to write.
The AutoCAD WS app lets you view and edit CAD work. It’s useful if you need to look at plans when you’re away from the office. The idesign app seems to work well for drafting, although the controls can take some getting used to. For drawing and…[Read more] -

Fabulous info – thanks. Especially the info about the ratio of paperwork vs. building – I had wondered about that.

Your plan is workable if you can find the right person. Most builders may want to employ you rather than partner up. A new landscaper may want a partner. You may wind up doing some of the actual landscape construction work to stay busy. This means shoveling bark, raking future lawns, or clearing irrigation ditches. The paper work is about 20% of…[Read more]

woah woah woah, miss smith. I never knocked the laborers. Believe it or not, that was me, once. Diggen away at some dogwood in some rich persons backyard. I just said thats not what i went to school for. I learned that there is a difference. The words are not interchangeable… but what do I know, I guess.
If your after the money.. check…[Read more] -

You’re funny. You can design the most beautiful landscape and if you don’t have competent, intelligent landscapers your work will come out looking like trash. Don’t denigrate those that do manual labor. It appears you believe that your choice of font is more important then a laborer knowing how to properly lay-out and execute drawn documents.…[Read more]

The art and architecture world are not that unlike.
We cry about being poor, starving geniuses, then stick our noses up at anyone actually delivering a marketable product because they found a formula to appeal to the ‘masses.’
This economy is going to change that.

I was reading some of the less flattering comments on another site earlier, and one of the funnier ones said his approach was something like “people like bridges, so I’ll use bridges; people like lights in windows so I’ll make the cottages look like they’re on fire; people like chimneys, so I’ll put in 2-5 per cottage.” But the writer said you…[Read more]

To be honest i only use 1 – 2 fonts because i spent the time to think about what i believe reprsents me as a designer. Im not scrolling through the mess of options found online and on my computer. And I am certainly not spending/wasting time looking through those font options like you are. Why is it so bad to have font selection be number 15 on…[Read more]

Yes I use a whole crap load of fonts on a wide range of projects, it just isn’t the first or fifteenth thing I think about, in fact I love to make lists for my project to-dos, never have I written a to do… Find perfect font… I have had the opportunity to do a pirate/shark themed project and did use papyrus and who knows maybe I will put it on…[Read more]
