Yes I use a whole crap load of fonts on a wide range of projects, it just isn’t the first or fifteenth thing I think about, in fact I love to make lists for my project to-dos, never have I written a to do… Find perfect font… I have had the opportunity to do a pirate/shark themed project and did use papyrus and who knows maybe I will put it on…[Read more]

All the critique aside, some of which I think is valid, you’ve got to give the man credit for a) being a marketing genius and b) bringing art to people who typically think they dont care about art….oh yeah and c) making cool paintings.

Well its a wash between all of the above. Im just confused how caring about something “silly” like letters means that I wont be a good/great landscape architect? I have a feeling James Corner did not splash papyrus all over his design presentation boards for the Highline. Just because LARE does not have a font section (maybe it should?) do…[Read more]

I often pull out my iPad in meetings to pull up manufacture websites to help a client pick stone, or benches, or to pull up images of plants to verify what the client wants. I have plugged my iPad into the tv in the clients conference room and done a power point presentation, I have used it to take quick photos, there are a wide range of great uses.

First off, it takes a huge amount of restraint not to just rip into how… Oh I almost went there. Two things graphic presentation (preliminary design) fonts may make a difference to give a theme or feeling, construction documents need clear crisp legible font/typeface so that a contractor can read and install the design.
A quick question, where…[Read more] -

Hi Tanya,
I use a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet which runs on Android. It’s a great tablet as it has all the functionality that most tablets have (camera, 3G etc) but also has a stylus (excellent for more accurate drawing), USB and SD Card slot.
I use Evernote with a Skitch plugin to make site drawings and to take notes. Evernote allows you to append…[Read more]

Let alone rip-offs. People bought prints for high hundreds to thousands of dollars expecting them to be worth something someday, but ended up with the Hummel figures or NASCAR plates of the art world. Not saying his paintings were terrible, if that is your taste, but he sold hundreds of “hand touched prints” for exorbitant amounts of money. And…[Read more]

As silly as it sounds I have had consultants who we work with that reclines are done with photographs. We will plot the consultants work, redline it, pin it to the wall and take digital photos rather than scanning ( because of scanning costs and also scanner access) then email or Dropbox a bunch of photos and a note to explain the changes, then a…[Read more]

When you deal in fantasy and without a budget and have the perfect setting anything is possible… It is also one perfect vantage point of an idealic scene, in the design landscape we often don’t ask the viewer to stand in one exact spot to create the visual, we ask the view to move through the space, or use the space, or be apart of the space not…[Read more]

I think Olmsted and earlier people like Capability Brown designed with emotion and sentiment in mind. I think they were partially inspired earlier landscape painters.

I agree with Brendan. A vpn is the best way to go, but the speed of the connection can become unweilding. Because of this, my experience has been that remote staff tend to save the files in which they are working to their desktops. This can create other problems if someone in the office is accessing the file at the same time.

Interesting, the language used to describe his painting…it is about moods…sentimental…I wonder why I rarely see landscape architecture built projects or even non-built projects described by emotional descriptives.
Do we build without emotion? Or, do we not know how to design with build in emotion? Or, does emotion only come in the eye of t…[Read more] -

In this part of the country, it seems to be @ 2 1/2-3 times the wholesale cost of the plant. That said, the quickest way to A. loose your shirt, or B. price yourself out of the market, is to depend too heavily on unit prices.
Work associated with the plantings (added topsoil, amendments, drainage) should be priced separately. Cin…[Read more] -

I like his work for technique and even read one of his books….but one tiny thing I always notice is that in his clearly “spring” scenes of cabins surrounded by blooming dogwoods, there is often smoke coming from the chimneys, and he shows street lights burning when it is not really dark. They have chilly springs in his worlds, I guess. Our…[Read more]

Well, the thing with Blue Gramma, you will need at least a deep semi-intinsive, if not a full blown intensive green roof. Prarie grasses, which Blue Grama is, have deep roots to hunt for water. It is heavy soil because it needs organics, which hold water. You need to have a support to act as mini retaining walls, so there will be “fins” that…[Read more]
