I haven’t been on here FOREVER…but spotted this thread. I heartily agree with what others are saying. BUT I also think there is room for a living with this career…but that it looks different then most of us imagined. We are still truckin’ along here in little Moscow…and it is getting better. The economy IS getting better. We are hearing it…[Read more]

Dustin,
I was just talking to some colleagues about this last week. I too recalled that there are accommodations for warnings other then truncated domes. The only thing I could find was in ADAAG A4.4.1 fig A4 for cane technique. The problem with this is that you end up having a preponderance of bollards. We are somewhat sensitive to forests of…[Read more] -

Cathryn,
Which section did you just pass? I took section D two weeks ago and am curious how quickly you got your results. I used his webinar and found it to be very helpful. I really would have been very overwhelmed had I not utilized it.
Thanks!

Thanks Andrew. My background is in public policy, not so much planning. I’m trying to cross over into that field but I’m attracted to the design aspect over the finance/ business aspect. When developers explain to me how their buildings are financed through “tax exempt bonds, tax equity…LLC partnership…3% something…maturity rate…” I ju…[Read more]

I have been using an iPad for work for a few months now and I have found there to be so many uses for it! From sketching apps, to AutoCAD apps, to GIS, and note taking apps I have found it to be very useful. I can provide you with a list of apps that I use if you are interested.

I’ve used my smartphone to draw comments on pdfs my coworkers email me when I’m on travel. It’s a pain to draw with your finger on such a small screen. I too have thought about buying a tablet, but I’m going to wait till they improve the latency on those things. I still like my small notepad and paper, so I can wait 🙂

Honestly as an employed RLA, I would NOT pursue a MLA. If you have a planning background you could convert it to Development Masterplanning or Resort Planning and development in the up and coming countries. Business courses are where our field lacks understanding and it continually holds back our field.

Hi Andrew,
I attended the review courses at Point Bonita in the Marin Headlands: not a bad place to study and take in beautiful scenery. Will have to go back again someday when I’m not thinking about test-taking.
As an aside, I also met two other review course participants who may soon be working as independent contractors with our firm. You n…[Read more] -

Hi Walter:
You may have read my postings before, but if you have not, let me introduce myself. I am Landplanner and yes, that is my psuedonym for now. If we strike up a closer camraderie here, then we can advance beyond my selective anonymity.
Anyway, I am writing you in a three fold manner. First fold is to say that the urban sketchers link i…[Read more] -

Hi Hakim, check out http://urbansketchers-singapore.blogspot.com/ Urban Sketchers is a great blog with many photos, sketches, etc. I think if yo go through the Singapore group, you will see many b/w or grey toned sketches that may give you some ideas.

Are you thinking just black inkline type work, or something where everything is in shades of green, or blue? I think either can work, but its not an easy thing to pull off. I have tried it in the past and while it never went terrible, I’m not sure it was worth the extra effort for me with my graphic design sensibility.
