“Systemically dangerous Institutions” That’s great! I’ve been saying for years now that the way we indebt ourselves to educate, house and transport ourselves was unsustainable. You can’t build a house slowly over time as you can afford it like pioneers did and how some people still do in “less advanced” countries. Building codes essen…[Read more]

There are other ways (if not better) to acheive the same results without using structural soils. Even though they are sold in the US, they are not without controversy. It is an expensive way to go, especially if you do not have the required ‘ingredients’ that make the product. There are tree pits with a suspended tree grate, trenches with s…[Read more]

Bummer. I probably could have used this on a recent project. We went a totally different instead, but this would have been a good (maybe even a better) option. Thanks for the link and info; I’ll keep it in mind for next time.

Geoffrey; Thanks for the reply. This is a utility trench between an electrical transformer and the main distribution room for a senior apartment building. (The transformer is located very near the main entry to the building to access the electrical room located very near the main entry by the architect; Hmmmm…..) The power company requires an…[Read more]

Hi Daniel
I work for http://www.surespancovers.com in the UK and we specialise in this type of access cover, our HIAC access cover model.
I have passed your details to our agent in Cincinnati, called Bogart International. Speak with Jenny.
All the best. -

Hi Daniel, whats the paving composition (base, joints, paver dimension) and the utility type and cover, is it a manhole? It’s tough to grasp exactly what’s going on from the given information. Are you looking to camoflouge the access or cover with pavers?

Looks like a stormwater retention basin to me. Presumably it holds the first flush and any excess goes into the overflow (normally a catch basin or drain inlet), codes often require some kind of canopy cover, so that would explain the myrtles (though they seem a poor choice). As to why they irrigated it, that’s weird, either for the first few y…[Read more]

I assume farming as opposed to gardening; you should probably define that and be able to articulate why farming as opposed to, say urban forestry or gardening. Though for arguments sake, “small farming” is more like gardening than an agricultural endeavor; there’s enough terrain vague in cities to lean toward farming.
For more conceptual s…[Read more] -

Check out foodurbanism.com (done by VWA in Switzerland) which is a good Atlas of info. I think Zurich Urban Farmers in Zurich is on the right path of figuring out how to make it profitable. In Canada, HBLanarc wrote a book about their work which is more about planning and design.
All good stuff! Good luck.

You have way too much faith in the system man and I am not sure why. My “cynicism” has been cultivated over many years, as I have witnessed the whole sale purchase of our government. That story you mentioned about your congressman is touching, but politicians are gifted as selling a narrative so I would observe caution. Are all politicians cr…[Read more]

Is the structure in the upper right of the photo intended to be an overflow from the landscape area? (I can’t tell how the grading is working in the foreground…) In several areas, run-off needs to be retained on site up to the <___> year storm. This may make sense out of the stone, being intended as a filter zone(??)
