I would suggest downloading a trail edition of Land f/x. The trail edition comes with thousands of sketch-up trees which are free for you to keep.

Since this thread has been picked up again, I thought I would let y’all know what I decided:
I DID end up taking Mike’s course and found it to be well worth it. He urges his students to sketch daily, just as many have suggested, but he also imparts great tricks, tips and wisdom that helped my skills jump forward immensely. Starting the fall…[Read more] -

“A great distance separating work and home creates intolerable rifts in people’s lives” -Christopher Alexander in The Timeless Way of Building” Well, it was something like that. Though that may be seen as more of a planning quote. He has some other good ones, such as the need for south-facing outdoor spaces.

The Hotel Del Coronado. Salk Institute in La Jolla. Drive up to LA to see the Getty. Balboa Park and Old Town are pretty yawn-inducing, IMHO. The Zoo is a pretty famous horticultural collection, aside from the animals..

To draw well, you simply need to do the following three steps:
1. Learn best graphic tricks available. So don’t waste time studying by yourself. 2. Learn to copy other people’s work. Buy graphic books and copy, copy, and copy. 3. Work hard, never stop drawing. Create opportunity to draw and draw continuously.
Believe me, if you follow the above…[Read more] -
Mike Lin replied to the topic Why landscape designers can't draw with hand comfortably anymore? in the forum GRAPHICS 14 years, 7 months ago
Indeed, I am a true believer on having quick ideas with hands that can put down on paper instantly, this way our right brain (the creative side) will engage more. As long as I can breathe, I will continue to push the hand graphics to where ever I can reach.

First, do not ever go to Mike Lin’s workshops. Terrible. You would be better served pencil sketching daily. Look at shadows and light and line weight – that is all there is. Mike Lin is a gimmick. Do not spend your money. If you have trouble designing-practice over and over. It is a muscle. You will succeed, you will fail. The ratio will fall in…[Read more]

Residential Design Group 14 years, 7 months agoHey Kev, funny we should be communicating this way instead of calling but wondered if any of you out there would want to start a sub group of residential for traditional/classical. Not many out there but I think would help to focus the discussion. Not that interested in what’s ‘hip’. Trying to keep a long view. No offense to the fashionistas. ps…[Read more]

Hi Deryn, I am browsing around the Land8 web site and found your discussion only after you have taken my workshop in Las Vegas this past May. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed not only you but the other two students from your school. The improvement from three of you were stunning and amazing. I also appreciate your invitation to your s…[Read more]

I want to thank everyone who shared their views on graduate school and beyond. It is amazing to see how some answers are very similar while other people had a completely different experience. At this point after weighing some of the responses I think I am going to hold off on graduate school. And if I do end up going back I would look at al…[Read more]

5th year BLA’s often do a large exit project which is called a thesis in some schools. I would be careful to compare it to a graduate school thesis that is rigorously reviewed by a committee and then becomes a published document by the university. Most major universities catalog their theses in their library. BLA project typically are no…[Read more]
