Jason,
Thanks for bringing this forward. I have little familiarity with Hood’s work, but found a video of a talk he did at TEDxBerkeley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBshFBR_fR4). I think he is a good example of what a “master builder” might look like today. Someone who might not have the expertise in all areas of design/engineering, but can…[Read more] -

If you liked Dirr’s “Manual of Woody Landscape Plants”than you will like the “Manual of Herbaceous Ornamental Plants” by Stil. It is laid out the same and is almost identical(It is the equivalent of Dirr’s book in the herbaceous world; annuals, bulbs, etc too). Not a lot of color photos just like Dirr’s book, but really an exhaustive reference…[Read more]

Surely a more sustainable approach is a social and moral obligation? (and professorial)

Any books by the late Graham Stuart Thomas.” Perennial garden Plants” or the modern florilegium is THE Bible in my book (pardon the pun)

I don’t yet own an authoritative perennials reference, but always assumed that the equivalent of Dirr for perennials was Herbaceous Perennial Plants: A Treatise on Their Identification, Culture, and Garden Attributes by Allan Armitage. It’s been on my list for quite a while.

Jason:
I am glad to read your well said rant. It reminded me of comments by Lewis Clarke, posted recently at http://www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/whativelearned.htm#CLARKE
Thanks for your original post/heads up on Walter Hood.

As part of my graduating thesis i looked at how the principles of permaculture could be used to assess the sustainable integration of urban agriculture into cities. What I found was that many of permacultures core principles manifest themselves out of necessity when some form of ‘crisis’ occurs, eg the Special Period in Cuba. David Holmg…[Read more]

dean clere replied to the topic theme park : a job scope of landscape architect? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 14 years, 10 months ago
The project development for a theme park takes quite a few teams to plan out. There is really not a one stop company that does it all but it takes landscape architects, engineers, interior designers, and many more to complete the job. A lot of it is outsourced as well.

Having experienced all of the above and more, including starting my own consulting practice, all I can say is:
Bravo, BZ Girl, most of us have been there….we’re all just trying to take control of our careers. I think it may be a natural progression…pushed fast forward by economic turmoil. The ‘Great Recession’ or the ‘recession that made us…[Read more] -

The question a professor of mine once challenged me mid-seminar discussion was: so you would choose to work and know your project sites? This during a sustainability seminar where we spoke about the importance of connections between place and people, the culture and the designer.
It is nice to see some designers stick to where they know wh…[Read more] -

“Suitable” in my Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is NOT defined as “common.” Nor are the two listed as synonyms in Roget’s thesaurus.

Perhaps allowing local children to discover that food is not necessarily something you have to purchase in packages is just too incendiary?

True. I didn’t realise she elected to be tried before a jury until I watched the video. I also didn’t realise that she had called the city and been told not to do it before she installed it.
On the other hand, I think it’s absurd that her neighbors complained to the city about a vegetable garden that wasn’t really ugly or offensive. I also thinks…[Read more] -

Pretty ridiculous, but I think there’s also a touch of sensationalism. She won’t get jail time if found guilty I’m sure. And did she ‘elect’ to be tried before a jury??

I spent the day yesterday schmoozing here in Western Colorado to let local architects and engineering firms know I’m still around. Let’s see, three engineering firms closed, one architect office closed, three engineering firms with time to “chat” and the largest local LA firm down to three bodies. A couple of phone calls with “that number has…[Read more]
