Roland I did exactly what you are proposing before I graduated in 1997. I just called firms up (most of them cold called) and said I was a student looking to get some exposure to different offices and could I come visit. Worked great. If you wanted to come to my office I would just keep you away from the “Confidential Project Room”. But un…[Read more]

How big of an area are you all thinking when you talk about Thyme lawns? There is a 100% chance that there will be a good weed crop every year. Are we going to hand weed that? -Miles

Well I have been growing a mix (sheep, hard, red, chewings) in my yard for several years. It’s a bout a 1500-2000 sf patch. I’m pusing the limits on where it should be grown as it’s in the wetest and sunniest area of our garden. What I have found is that in this climate (zone 7) it really wants to be mowed regularly (not as much as the turf). I…[Read more]

Thyme lawns and chamomile lawns were quite a fashion in England some decades ago.
Like everything, it takes the right conditions. -

DESIGN 14 years, 11 months agoHello! I am looking for manuals on Design itself – especially combining forms and shapes(geometry), getting beatiful lines, proportions and finally getting harmonious composition. Any good books or e-books? The best free available on-line:) Waiting for advices!

I don’t know if you are still at UI, but one of the classes (I beieve it is the seniors) used to do a firm visiting field trip in October every year. I would think that Steve Drown could hook you up with a list and maybe shoot a couple of emails to break the ice and “move things along”.
At minimum, he should be able to let you know which one…[Read more] -

Nick,
I just was made aware of your post here, and realize that its several years old, but thought I would respond just in case you were still considering the opportunity to work with EMI at some point in the future. I was a summer intern with EMI in 2008 out of their Colorado office and had the opportunity to travel to Africa twice with them…[Read more] -

I think saying “most firms” have confidential projects pinned up is a bit of a stretch. I am sure most firms would be glad to show you around. Finding a contact might not be a bad idea though. If you don’t already have a friend working for one of the firms you are interested in…maybe you could find someone through Land8. Good luck!

Let me know if you plant any of these…I’d love to see some installations. I’m planning in putting one of these types in on a residential landscape in DC if the deal closes on the house. I know you can get RTF here (its all I spec on commercial jobs). RTF is Rhizomatic Tall Fescue from Barenbrug. Its a real heavy-duty grass used for athletic f…[Read more]

I was just up a few months ago, so I’ll have to see just how cheap I can get a ticket on the MegaBus. My record is $13.50 round trip from Baltimore.

Thats why I never give money to panhandlers…you become an enabler, usually to a substance abuse problem. You really are just encouraging destructive anti-societal behaviour. I can agree somewhat with what Olin, but you have to handle it in a manner like Walter Hood did in Oakland. You can design a space for them to use such as places to hang…[Read more]

There is a very cool fountain at the nursery I worked at this spring. Picture a 5′ half sphere, flat/dish side up, nested in a cube base. Water fills the dish, rolls over the edge, clings to the sphere and disappears into a gap between the sphere and cube. Short story long, kids and adults alike can’t resist touching the water as it rolls down the…[Read more]

There are so many lawn alternatives out there. I like the look of the ground cover thymes like elfin thyme and woolly thyme.
I found out recntly that roman chamomile can be used as a lawn, too, although I’ve never seen an example. -
