Jason, have you ever been to Las Vegas? Take a drive around North Las Vegas. Don’t forget Dubai too. All you need is money, water and you can grow anything anywhere! Obviously he had money to live in that estate and assistance from the Pakistan Govt.

GIS has very limited applications in the private sector (more in the public sector) because it is very expensive for the results it yeilds. It seems to be most beneficial for regional and super-regional planners so they can create kinda-fancy graphics. I, too , ran into the overemphasis on GIS on a recent stint into an MLA. In certain sectors of t…[Read more]

I highly recommend a visit to any and all landscape architects – a must-see ranked right up there with the Vietnam Memorial in my opinion.

That’s true. It can be expensive. Idaho has a website called Inside Idaho, where you can get free data. I think a few other states have similar websites.

Its coming….At the career fair at my school (Iowa State University) I talked with several firms who were looking to start GIS departments in the near future. Its not easy to get started with, all that data is not free, and without data the software doesnt do much good. I’m not sure about other places, but in Iowa you can access a lot of GIS d…[Read more]

You can get a version of CS3 on eBay for $300 if you are patient. I’d go that route.

Back to the memorial of the ‘bad guy’…depends on your cultural perspective, doesn’t it?
Columbus Day is now Native American Day (at least here it is) as that day marked the beginning of the extermination of indiginous people.
The name of my town is a memorial to an individual exterminator of native people – lot of Lakota won’t even live in t…[Read more] -

As the late-great Sam Kinnison once said….
“SAND! What grows in sand? NOTHING!!!!! NOTHING GROWS IN SAND!!!! MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS!!!!”
Yes, the caps-lock was indeed warranted in this quotation. -

On the other hand, this opens the door for making all shores of the world as a rallying point…and…heaven forbid…all nations a next door target……it just takes one charismatic clarion call…
In retrospect, it might be better to bury the whole issue under the sea rather than give it legs via a googlable network exposure…. -

I’ve read DNA testing of the sort used to identify people (as opposed to identifying specific genetic issues) takes two hours, if you really want it done quickly.
I used DNA testing on a fisheries management project, and if the state of Alaska can turn around 10,000 sockeye salmon samples in four days to let us know which rivers the pulse is…[Read more] -

Thanks, Rob, that is interesting – I geuss cremation could also be chosen, to avoid the shrine problem, but that option was possibly not available so quickly..

I am sure many faiths disapprove of cremation, Islam being one of them. Being the clock was ticking on the 24 hour timeframe, and no country would take him, and the volatility of having the body buried in your country, seems to make the burial at sea the best option.

DNA takes weeks when its not really a top priority or if the workers are union members. I think this event was very high to get it done! They were aboard a military ship, so they had all the necessary equipment.

How do we know for certain that his body was dumped out at sea? You actually trust the Govt? What if…if they kept the body and are now transporting it to Area 51 in the Nevada desert. Who knows. The Bin Laden estate could’ve used some good landscaping.
Can the Govt now stop sending billions of $$$ to aid Pakistan? How do you send all that…[Read more] - Load More
