I used Permaloc aluminum edging 2 yrs ago to keep DG in my path and the dirt and mulch from my berms out. I called asalesman at Permaloc and he was very helpful specifying what I needed. They then sent CAD dwgs to show how it needs to be installed. I was very careful to put in geotextile, then gravel then another layer of geotextile before the D…[Read more]

As i imagine as our spaces become more ‘Urbanize’ and densities go up i would image the way we deal with stormwater will have to be accomplished in a more vertical and creative way. Just keep the civil engineers out the conceptual phase and only use the to actualize the technical details of the soulution.

I’m an RLA and own a design build company. I use this spreadsheet program. Amazing results. Comprehensive and easy to adjust margins, labor rates and material cost.
Hands down one of the best estimators out there and developed by someone who has been in the business for many, many years.

Hello Earthworker.
I feel for you. I’ve also cut my teeth to earn the title in our country (and still hacking away to earn my respectable body of work). On several aspects, I certainly agree with you.
Meanwhile…

A lot of posts here bad mouth the LARE. Here’s an irony. I qualified to sit for the test, attend an LARE boot camp, paid for the test and spent 3 days out of town taking it. I passed 3 out of 5 sections. Pretty typical really. Had to wait 6 months to take the other two sections which I passed. Hallaleua. I also qualified to take the Nation…[Read more]

My state chapter’s website includes an overview of the process they went through to get licensing here and the primary driver was protecting our turf from other professions. I personally am glad they did it and think overall it’s beneficial for the profession.
I agree that the LARE has some failings as a metric but since it is only one of the…[Read more] -

Just as with lawyers and architects it was deemed necessary that landscape architects be licensed under the guise of protecting the health and welfare of the public when in actuality it was to protect the firms and jobs of those people already practicing landscape architecture, albeit unlicensed as there was no process for registration.
So the…[Read more] -

Architects were not even required to have licenses back then.

It’s interesting that Fredrick Law Olmsted is usually referred to as a landscape architect, even though he clearly wasn’t.

“Then…RLAs let’s commit to fighting for our equal place with architects and engineers and apparently the Federal Gov.”
I’m pretty sure the feds had a job classification titled “Landscape Architect” decades before licensure for landscape architects existed. Maybe they are grandfathered in? -

Hhmm…well I don’t think I sense a tone of superiority. Like I mentioned…we do design/build and my husband is licensed and enjoys what he does…we aren’t working on anything earth shattering here. I am not licensed and don’t feel like less of a person…I help with designing, we are a good team. Being licensed is simply another way to move his…[Read more]

Let’s face it. We have a lot of talented young designers that think it is really cool to call themselves landscape architects. I know the feeling. I am guilty of that. I probably did play it up a few times here or there when I didn’t think it would hurt anybody. However, I know we need to promote and protect our professional license because ou…[Read more] -

I would say there was a time when people were able to get their foot into a profession without formal education…and I think in many ways this is a preferable route. Plus, a little easier on the pocket book. :/
We could look at Olmsted…was he licensed? But we consider him the father of landscape architecture. Up and coming lawyers also used to…[Read more] -

Thomas, not sure about Filemaker, but you may want to check out Include Software’s Censeo. They also have a larger version called Asset that has been around for over 2 years. They could also help you with the conversion of your files, I’d expect.

I’m not interested in using the title (as seldom as that may be) so much for the ‘prestige’ (because I dont think the word ‘architect’ carries much prestige today anyway), but because it better represents what I do and how I think.
Right on Nick, that is where I am coming from as well. How I speak to others about what I do and using a term that…[Read more]
