Public employees have their salaries published on searchable websites. Hiding what employees make only empowers the employer…as is obvious in the case of BZGirl, that is what the employer is trying to do..Hiding salaries allows men to make 30% more than women, as well as many other abuses..
My rule for offices is, if it’s out, it’s your job to…[Read more] -

Everyone above made some great points!
The RLA is all you need and the rest is fluff. Complete Fluff! I would advice others to not waste time with LEED, AP, etc “until” you first get licensed. Then, do the other things to boast your ego. I see plenty of entry level grads with LEED and are they more knowledgeable than myself or someone with an…[Read more]

I have my opinion and respect yours as well.
Having experienced the exact same scenario in a landscaping company almost twenty years ago, I can tell you that it is all that I need to know FOR ME to draw a conclusion. Nothing positive can be gained from one employee knowing what another is making. If something is not put away it is not good, but…[Read more] -

A very uncoventional route…
I got a crash course in local plants by working one short season at a nursery that specialized in native plants. Also joined the local Master Gardener program in order to begin making friends/contacts and getting hands on with plants.
No money in either, of course, but I learned a lot fast and had fun. -

A) “Private” documents shouldn’t be left in public places.
B) Looking at a piece of paper, especially in spreadsheet form, one can take-in the whole document before you even realize what you’re looking at.
C) Many Landscape Architecture firms are “Employee Owned Corporations”. If it is truly employee owned (and it’s not just another feel-good b.s.…[Read more] -

Funny how this topic is taking off all of a sudden…
While I studied landscape architecture and worked in the field for a few years, I am not currently practicing as a landscape architect. I’ve been a full time writer and editor with Landscape Architecture Magazine since 2008, so I have no need for any certifications myself. I just think thi…[Read more] -

I went from MN to CA with no problem – I just visited nurseries, walked around looking at plants and asked a lot of questions. Once you learn how to learn about plants it just gets easier and easier to learn new ecoregions. Plus there is so much plant traffic from east to west, overseas to the US you will probably be at least passingly familiar wi…[Read more]

Hey hey, is this Andrew from U of I? The former Vandal. How are things? Have you heard from any of our classmates? Jen G is the only one I know of that is still in landscape architecture, well sort of anyway. Everyone else disappeared.

Aloha Craig,
You goofball! My comments were directed specifically to Thomas and BZ Girl. If you read my original post, it had no mention of Hawaii and anything else about my personal life. Thomas decides to inject the “lets hear your sob story” questions.
And did you read Jersey man and his comments to me regarding “fluff” statements? Am I suppose…[Read more] -

I would agree with what everyone else is saying…get a masters in something related like planning, urban design, architecture, ecology…depending on what kind of work you want to do in the future. I got my bachelors in community and regional planning and am just finishing up a dual bla/mla degree. Would have preferred just the BLA but Iowa S…[Read more]

A bit out of left field, but get an MBA. It’s like an asset portfolio, diversify. If you can’t get LA work out of school, you will have a good shot at getting a job in business. You can always keep looking for LA jobs…while gainfully employed, even if it’s not your dream job.
In my opinion, having a working knowledge of finance, marketing, an…[Read more] -

I was reminded of this article of yours just yesterday during a job interview. It was suggested that I “check out” three different certifications. While these all seem valuable each and of themselves, each one is time consuming and expensive. It’s expensive just to collect the study materials! It’s not even possible to evaluate the redundancies…[Read more]
