A bit out of left field, but get an MBA. It’s like an asset portfolio, diversify. If you can’t get LA work out of school, you will have a good shot at getting a job in business. You can always keep looking for LA jobs…while gainfully employed, even if it’s not your dream job.
In my opinion, having a working knowledge of finance, marketing, an…[Read more] -

I was reminded of this article of yours just yesterday during a job interview. It was suggested that I “check out” three different certifications. While these all seem valuable each and of themselves, each one is time consuming and expensive. It’s expensive just to collect the study materials! It’s not even possible to evaluate the redundancies…[Read more]

Agreed I would really look at something that will broaden your horizons over redoing your undergrad in grad school.

That’s a good point. I had dabbled in the thought of studying some sort of ecologic work or plant systems, but didn’t really put much stock in it. I’ll have to do some more research on programs and see if there’s a masters that could be more beneficial.

Thanks for the help! Yeah that’s what I was kind of worried about. The debt would a great deal to try and climb out of. I was just thinking that maybe having an MLA on top of my resume, would possibly make me more marketable and potentially desirable as an employee. I was hoping the increased study of theory coupled with the work ethic to f…[Read more]

I am a recent “lucky” MLA graduate with a job. I was able to intern while going to school and that experience certainly helped me land a job. I know it’s hard to find something now, but perhaps something will open up during your masters. Times are tough in the professional realm now which gives you time to go back to school. Hopefully by the end…[Read more]

I would think that having real world experience would help inform your masters. How do you know what you want to concentrate your masters in if you haven’t practiced? What can you bring to a masters program without having first explored the profession?
School and work are much different… to the point that I question how significantly a masters…[Read more] -

Necessity is the mother of invention. I can’t even fathom the amount of labor it would take to build or work in these fields. But given the choice of eating and not eating…nature must be tamed.
This type of project could never be built in the US. A pound of rice would have to fetch 25 bucks! Subsistence farming is no competition to the les…[Read more] -

Your question is both intriguing and confusing at the same time, since I don’t fully understand the question, it is difficult to precisely answer it. Yet the concept interests me immensely.
When you say, “landscape”, do you refer to “landscaping” or the “built environment” or non-developed land?
When you say, “art”, do you refer to fine art or cr…[Read more] -

Government regulations in SE Asia are actually doing away with terraced fields. (not sure if Greenpeace is to blame or not) The ancient agricultural practice encourages bio-diversity by rotating a variety of crops and using the water to raise fish which creates a symbiotic relationship with the crops. The practice is now being replaced by…[Read more]

Yup, you’re right… I thought the article was using swidden synonymously with terraced fields but upon review it’s apparent that terraced fields were one form of agriculture used in the cleared space. It also appears that there are a variety of terraced fields, built in different environments with unique methods. It becomes difficult to…[Read more]

I love the use of art, from a little statue off by its self or the fountain in the centerpiece. This is all soothing to someone and it gives each person there own time when viewing all to themselves.Plants are art in itself. All you Landscape architects are creating art each design you do.When I design an outdoor space and put my pergola product up…[Read more]

I think swidden agriculture refers to the practice of clearing land to plant and then leaving it fallow as part of a multi-season rotation. Fire is a primary tool and it is most often seen in interior, mountainous Southeast Asia (especially northern Thailand, Burma, Laos, and southern China) and is most often conducted by indigenous groups for…[Read more]

OK, so maybe I underestimated the ecological effects of swidden-cultivation… but it’s a dying practice and is not as bad what they are doing now… still look pretty cool…

Interesting paper on the ecology and sociological implications of terraced fields:

I can’t see how it can not be an impact on the environment if it went from short grasses on slopes to terraced wetlands. That is clearly displacement of habitat. There are four distinct things that I feel make us give this a pass. One is that it is assumed to be very old rather than a new exploitation. The second is that it is assumed to be done by…[Read more]
