Thanks for this resource Wes. This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for.
I haven’t checked out your paper fully yet, but I will let you know if I have any questions.

Hi Kirstin!
First of all I’d ignore some of the negitivity you may have encountered here. With the recent economic situation a lot of us have had extra time to complain about not having work/getting laid off/not finding a job. If you really want to pursue a BLA go for it! It is extremely challanging and rewarding if it’s where your passions…[Read more] -

We have a standard ctb, but if you leave everything on zero layer and assign true colors that seems to be the most efficient and easy way to get a rendered look and a ‘clean’ set of office standards for graphics atleast

Yeah, I got overtime pay for maybe two weeks out of the 4 months I was there. Most of the time I didn’t report over time for two reasons; one, I thought that working extra hard (and cheap) would help secure my job as the economy was headed south and two, when I sought approval (it had to be signed off) for overtime worked I got stink-eye from the…[Read more]

@ Theodore
No adversarial attitude to employers here. I’m just curious as to how much of the long hours is folklore and how much is actually practiced.
I will admit that I did not like those particular employers from the moment that I met them, but they were the only people who I worked for in the last twenty years whom I did not like. However,…[Read more] -

Do you already have your CTB (colors / pen weights) set up or are you just going to use the stock AutoCAD colors/line weights?
If you use existing (somebody else’s) symbols you will have to modify them so that they jive with your CTB file by changing the colors / line weights to match your CTB so that they print properly.
Here is a free CTB that…[Read more] -

Every school is a little different. The school I went to went mostly on GPA since you applied after a year of school. So that does not help you much.
I agree with Thomas that you should just ask the professors what they are looking for. I know that what you had stated above would be great to hear if I were admitting students.
As for a portfolio…[Read more] -

I just completed an advanced GIS course based largely on using geostatistical analysis. I think you’re using the term “metadata” incorrectly – what you’re thinking of is attribute data, metadata is information about the layer – who made it, when, what it is – whether a shapefile, GDB, etc.
For the final project I modeled the location of el…[Read more] -

I’m very interested in how GIS information can be used in this profession including some of the aspects that you mention. I took an Ecological Design course last semester that utilized GIS. It provided a general introduction to software (ArcGIS). It essence, the ability to utilize GIS is largely, if not entirely, dependent upon the metadata tha…[Read more]

60-70-80 hour/wk was standard at my first job. I don’t have a problem with long hours. When I’m working, time disappears. I have a problem working those hours without recognition, either in the form of additional compensation, time off (“you’ve already worked 40hrs by Wednesday, take Thurs/Fri off”) or even a simple “hey, well-done, we appreciate…[Read more]

Any kind of GIS training seems beneficial to me, if that’s what you want to do. It’s really up to you. Does it interest you? Biological statistics is a pretty broad term. Are you talking about plants, animals, people, disease…demographics…? It seems that with a solid foundation in GIS and statistics, you could apply that knowledge in a variety…[Read more]

On occasion I have worked more than 40 hours a week, but it’s not often. I am salaried, and of course it is expected that I need to get my work done, whatever it takes. I’ve done 2 am stints before (not just me, but a team of us) to prepare for a very important interview.
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems there is an adversarial attitude her…[Read more] -

I just completed a graduate level statistics course that my major professor recommended I take. My thesis is largely based around GIS analysis and analyzing tree composition in the 1800’s in Iowa. I honestly feel like the class did little to advance my research or provide any relative knowledge that would help.

Stop by the department and speak to the professors. Tell them exactly what you wrote above. Ask them what they are looking for. Show them the work you have compiled and ask them how it could be approved upon. If they know who you are and that you’re passionate and driven they will be more likely to admit you to the program.
