Hey Michelle – I’ve changed my process a bit and it has really saved me time – I got a bunch of vellum so I would be familiar with the texture and erasability of the real exam and have been drawing my design right on the vellum in blue line. My understanding from the orientation guide is that blue lines don’t have to be erased…can anyone confirm…[Read more]

I bought mine with a 40% off deal with Barnes & Noble. If you get on BN’s or Border’s e-mail list, you get coupons up to 40% (I got a 50% one time when you use a mastercard). You can also look online for the coupon codes. I have purchased quite a few expensive books this way (great for textbooks), provided they still carry it, but and…[Read more]

A little tangental – “The Aesthetics of Ruins” by Robert Ginsberg – reading it in google books as the paper copy is somewhere between $99 and $500 (!) Lovely writing……..

I’ll look for it , thanks Henry. Read his collaboration on Garrett Ekbo with Dorothee Imbert and enjoyed it. What a guy!

Currently reading “Retrofitting Suburbia” and finding it quite interesting and well-researched. If you have more of a planning bent and are into how we can make our suburbs more walkable and sustainable, you’ll find it to be a good read. If you’re more into garden design and plants, not so much. It has lots of case studies and hard numbers data on…[Read more]

How about this idea? Find a Landscape Architect that you look up to, or like their work or their firm size and ask if they will take some time to mentor you. That way instead of looking for a job, you can keep your firm open, develop some professional relationships and get some advice. Even if you have to drive a couple of hours and pay for lunch…[Read more]

Yeah, for some reason people today have to over-design everything, instead of just doing what works and makes sense, which tends to be more beautiful anyway…

Nice thread about “firm sustainability”
Interesting that few of the replies mention the market, or should I say the markets– Government, institutional, commercial, land development, residential to name a few. A firm’s type of market should have a lot to do with it’s character, abilities, size, and sales efforts.
My firm is a…[Read more]

Agreed. I think this is part of “paying your dues.” I’m fairly certain I bought more expensive books when I was in school and had virtually no income.

Henry, thank you for asking. Now I’m torn, as that is just long enough to make me want the current edition now, yet close enough that it’s tempting to wait for the update. Maybe I need to get the current edition, and use it to make so much money in the next 13 months that the cost of the new edition will be pocket change. Ha! 🙂
I’m not sure that…[Read more]

Hi Jessie,
Why would you want to import a PDF into SketchUP? To my knowledge that cannot be done. You can import other file formats including .DXF and .DWG (In SketchUP 8 Pro) You can export PDF’s from SketchUP.

I don’t understand this. You know you put part of it where it was not supposed to go. Some of the other examples that have been given by the people who think that they got graded too harshly seem to know what they did wrong, but don’t think they should fail for some reason.
It either does or it doesn’t. conform to the requirements. All you have…[Read more]

hi michelle,
To answer your questions… the section C exam i took in June played out like this: one vignette with the detailed building/parking/driveway vehicular circulation layout; one vignette with “provide 2 entirely different conceptual layouts” of parking/driveway/buildings; one vignette with placing a building/parking and then writing a…[Read more] -
Andrew Garulay, RLA replied to the topic Any solution for the sharp ends on rolled steel edging overlaps? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 5 months ago
That is a bit of work as a retro-fix, but it really is not too bad for future work. Have you looked at permlok or other manufactured metal edging? It sounds like you are using plain steel strips with hooked stkes to hold them. I’d expect that they will be all over the place between summer heat and freeze/thaw.How has this faired over the years…[Read more]

Melanie Reber, RLA replied to the topic Any solution for the sharp ends on rolled steel edging overlaps? in the forum GENERAL DISCUSSION 15 years, 5 months ago
Sorry about that… it is the top of the end of the edging itself that is too sharp. I honestly don’t know if it is due to a poor cut in the edging or simply an istallation issue. I will have to find out. I really don’t like the way they look overlapped anyway, so I suppose I am looking for a better solution to the whole finish of this type of…[Read more]
