Wow! Baby boomers are equated with the ‘top one percent” ?? I don’t think so! Mark Zuckerberg is 26! I am 53, I was born in 1957, I am at the tail end of the baby boom, and there has been nothing easy at any step of the way, including the Reagan recession of 1987=1990, that basically killed the job market for us newly minted MLA’s in the late…[Read more]

Can you point me towards some actual data that would indicate lower taxes would actually help anything? I’m not being argumentative, it just seems to me that the reason jobs are overseas is because ‘consumers’ can consume products produced overseas for significantly less than products made in the USA due to labor costs.
Out of the whole cost of…[Read more]

I have to question the thinking of anyone who believes that our way out of this mess is through expanding the government and raising taxes. They’ve done such a great job with what they had, lets give them more!
For purposes of not just economic prosperity but for national security, we need to bring jobs home. The United States needs to be…[Read more]

That’s a tough call… As the boss, it seems that it’s your job to make decisions based on what’s in the companies best interest, not on what is easy or makes you sleep better at night. Sure, it would definitely be easier to lay off the single guy but is it in the best interest of the company? Are you there to be a counselor or to build a lean,…[Read more]

Most of those approaching retirement lost the value of their retirement savings two years ago. Maybe we can cut a deal: give the jobs to the young…who have a lifetime of work ahead…and who must buy out the older workers! Everyone wins

Two significant sites to landscape architecture – Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson – its up near Golden Spike National Historic Site and Hovenweep National Monument if you can get down there.

Thanks! Yeah, I’ve been through numerous fluctuations regarding my views on landscape architecture over the past two years. I’ve even posted comments on Land8 that are completely opposite of what I describe above, stating basically that land archs are not necessary and that engins and archs can get projects built without us. I still believe they…[Read more]

Wow! What a load of generation generalizations, Ashish.

My partner insisted we go to this park. He lived in Paris for 5 years while getting his Masters degree. He loved this park and could not wait to show me. He was soooo disappointed with what we found when we got there..

That’s an interesting way to frame it because “deserving” in my experience does play into decisions of who gets to stay and who is let go. If you were the boss, what would be an easier decision: laying off the guy who’s wife just had a baby or the single guy who has no real attachments to the region and can easily pick up and move. If you’re an…[Read more]

Not really the state of the profession, but here’s a street-smart heads-up from a colleague: know the future venues of the Olympics, World Cup, Commonwealth Games (no comment on the present venue), World Expo, etc., and position yourself there….somehow…like, London is coming very soon…Brazil will be waiting in the wings…

I tend to go with landplanner’s reply that the Board (that is, LAAB for fellow practitioners in the US) looks into the academic programs individually, so BSLArch programs are not discriminated from accreditation – across the board.
We also had this same discussion in the University in the course of several curricular reviews and in the end, it is…[Read more]

I am researching every LA program in the country, and almost all (thus far) are BLA’s that are accredited. I only found one BSLA that is listed as accredited. Perhaps LAAB makes it part of accreditation that the professional accredited degree is called BLA (like it is supposed to be) and MLA. It’s that way with architecture. Thanks for the correction.

I just started an MLA (2yr) and am seriously reconsidering my decision as well. At the school I attend, it’s like starting over for a BLA. I can’t get the classes I wanted to take, and the rest of the time is wasted taking studios I took 15 years ago. I have 11years in practice, and am licensed. I don’t need to explore the profession to decide…[Read more]
