I had the same kind of meeting with Peter Walker, he was very encouraging and a very nice man. I was suprised how many of the big names in LA were so approachable, especially since most didn’t have entourages constantly surrounding them (although, Dr. Yu had quite a contingency with him).

There were presentations with regards to the state of the business, primarily aimed at firm owners and those who have recently ventured out on their own as a result of the depressed job situation. It was not ignored as LAM has seemed to do. Even within many other presentations, the state of the profession was mentioned, often in jest as to when…[Read more]

After checking air photos on Google, I realized the Nevada photos are of Sun City Anthem and Anthem Country Club, just a few miles away from me. I’ve actually worked on some landscape plans for homes in there. On the ground level, it presents a rather sterile face and appears very controlled. Of course some of that control has fallen by the…[Read more]

Trimble is GPS survey equipment and uses a data collector just like a total station. The info is downloaded and put into a drawing using a choice of a number of different softwares in conjunction with a cad program.
A handheld Garmin GPS is not going to give you a lot of accuracy (+/- 30′ most likely) which is great for navigation, but not…[Read more]

Thanks, Boilerplater! This makes sense for a trail layout if the location has satellite coverage. I opted for the laser level for the backyard project I am working on. It was quick and easy, and now I don’t need to do anything extra to be able to use the data. I’m just excited to use this GPS unit, I guess!

Sounds like the industry is just fine and dandy. I am sure the Design Strategies of Urban Parks is quite relevant at a time when cities are laying off staff by the hundreds and can’t even afford to maintain the parks they have? Where were the seminars about finding a job after ten years at a firm? Or the seminar about how 30% to 50% of LA’s…[Read more]

I worked on a park project where we had surveyors use a Trimble GPS system to get points for trails that we laid out in the field. They then just downloaded it and sent me a CAD file that I could import into my drawing, just had to make sure I was using the same base coordinate system. I could ask them for more detail on how they did it, but I no…[Read more]

I think the only way is through GIS. I am looking for similar information, but for a Trimble GPS. Has anyone used GPS for general survey and grading work? Some of the units claim accuracy within 10 cm if the data collection lasts long enough (45 minutes within 6 miles of a reference site). It seems like this is pretty loose for water management,…[Read more]

Isn’t this similar to Jim Corner’s book with Alex MacLean on the American Landscape? I like the photos, though, of course – aerials are absolutely addicting..I would love to have been a photo interpreter for during WWII..

That link is great. The photos are incredible. We could have a discussion on each. The prison photos are interesting.
I really like to see the layouts from the air.You can also “see” the desert and how these communites have been dropped in.

I met a landscape architect who has a ph.d. in soils: http://www.barrettkays.com/
I just worked with him briefly but he seemed extremely knowledgeable and competent with an understanding of the role that design plays as well.

Paul,
Mike Lin has a book that guides you through the techniques he covers in his drawing class, Drawing and Designing with Confidence. I took his 2 week class and found it to be helpful (http://www.beloose.com/). His perspective charts might be worth checking out, as they make perspective drawing really easy. The first book we covered in school,…[Read more]

Check out the Land8 Bookstore (powered by Amazon) under the Graphics section. There are a lot of great selections there to wet your palette. Chip Sullivan has a couple of great books, as well. He has a very loose style similar to crackskullbob (above).
Jim Leggitt has a lot of good examples on his blog as well as Mike Lin’s new site, beloose.com.
